In the past, I have criticized President Barack Obama for not saying enough about urban gun violence, and mostly mentioning it in a tacked-on, ornamental way after there had been a mass killing on a college campus or in a small-town movie theater.
But earlier this week, the president had words for Chicago about its violence problem. And, although it wasn't him speaking directly to us, the message was poignant and came through loud and clear from the chairman of the Barack Obama Foundation leading the development of the Obama presidential library.
Whether the library will wind up in Jackson Park or Washington Park on the South Side isn't clear yet. But what is unquestionable is that this library is no small thing, particularly as the first presidential library in history to be placed in a struggling community.
Both neighborhoods where the parks are located — Woodlawn and Washington Park — were chosen specifically because they need revitalizing and would benefit greatly from an economic engine.
Folks often talk about how the William J. Clinton Presidential Center reinvigorated an abandoned warehouse area in Little Rock, Ark., transforming it into a thriving business and tourist district. But that area was located on the edge of a downtown, populated mostly by the homeless.

A crack house on the South Side would be a more fitting shrine to Obummer. If ObOzO were ever in a library, then, a library may be appropriate. The real question should be where in Tehran will the Valerie Jarret library be?
