Ted Cruz’s Favorite Stump Speech Tool: Jokes
Time ^ | October 15, 2015 | Philip Elliott

'The press conference at the White House was a little bit awkward. Every time a reporter addressed a question to Your Holiness, Obama answered.'

Ted Cruz sometimes campaigns as though he were doing a set at The Improv.

The junior Senator from Texas’ comedic timing is one of his sharper skills. So, too, are his impressions of figures as varied as the late President Reagan, radio host Mark Levin and journalist Sam Donaldson, not to mention The Simpsons characters, Darth Vader and JFK.

His humor might also be his riskiest trait. Like former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole, Cruz’s jokes could come across as mean-spirited if voters aren’t in on the joke too.

But when Cruz hits it, he connects with the audience in a very real way. He has his act down and he knows it.

“I spent most of last week in Washington, D.C.,” Cruz told his audience packed into a Beef, Bread and Brew restaurant this week in Keokuk, Iowa. “So it is great to be back in America.”

...

In the meantime, he’s organizing like gangbusters in the early nominating states. A caucus-goer in Iowa or a voter in New Hampshire cannot escape a Cruz event without turning over contact information to junior aides, and Cruz is the first—and only to do so publicly—to announce a chair of every county in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

So while he waits for his early organizing efforts to pay off and rivals to implode, Cruz is having fun.

Obama is often his favored target....

GO Cruz. This is how you beat a Cult of Personality like 0’s. You mock it.

Every one-liner that I’ve heard has been a ten, and that’s hard to do. I enjoy the laughs. Our side needs them.

His jokes also expose the opposition in a disarming way.

With the things the Dems say the jokes almost write themselves. For example when they say that climate change is the biggest national security threat I tend to want to hear someone say, “Well, yeah, I guess a nuke would drastically alter the weather patterns.” Not exactly funny maybe.

Exactly. The left can’t deal with being mocked. They get angry and show their true faces.

I think its cool that he can fall into a Princess Bride routine so easily with an audience member.

“Well, yeah, I guess a nuke would drastically alter the weather patterns.”

I was just thinking the same thing a few days ago.

Obama says Global Warming is the greatest problem we face so his solution is to give Iran nukes and give us nuclear winter.

If you want to hear Ted Cruz imitate Mark Levin, check his stump speech in Oskaloosa, IA.

Reagan was much funnier than Ted, but Ted is excellent in his own right. Like you said, humor “disarms” your opponent.

"Reagan was much funnier than Ted, but Ted is excellent in his own right. "

Yeah, but the giant Reagan was not a hypocrite like Cruz.

Corker Bill

TPA

He votes one way, then opposes his own vote with righteous indignation.

But his supporters don't care.

My friend, Reagan screwed up too, sometimes royally. Look at Simpson-Mazzoli. And we are still paying for that horrendous mistake on an issue so simple a child could have understood it. Bob

Worry about your own candidate who supports...

Obamacare on steroids.

Normalization with Cuba. (Props up the Castro boys)

Anti Free Market renewable fuel standards and ethanol subsidies.

Eminent domain property seizures to give to cronies.

Funding the “good parts” of Planned Parenthood.

Cruz acknowledges that his rhetoric and style make establishment-minded Republicans nervous. He offers no apology. “I kind of thought that was the whole point of the campaign,” Cruz says.

Indeed it is. And, the reason he's succeeding.

Civil Liberties green green RED
Education green yellow green
Energy & Environment green yellow green
Foreign Policy & Defense green RED green
Free Market yellow yellow RED
Health Care & Entitlements green green RED

Budget: Cruz has made massive financial deals, has put tens of thosuands of people to work, has run a billion dollar business, and protected a bottom line.  Next flight of fantasy...
Civil Liberties: Trump has said he'll round up and deport illegal immigrants, build a wall that is 60 feet tall along our border.  This results in his red marker on civil liberties.  No sale.
Free Market: The "FREE MARKET"...  Nothing in life is free.  The cost of this "FREE MARKET" has been tens of millions of U. S. jobs.  Trump wants to bring them back.  That warrants a red marker.  LOL
Health Care and Entitlements: Trump has proposed a private sector replacement of Obamacare.  He wants to reduce entitlements as part of getting the budget under control.  This red marker is simply proposterous.
Moral issues:  What moral issues?  Good grief.  Name one moral issue Trump has a problem with.
Second Amendment:  This is simply a fraud.  Trump has a paper on Second Amendment rights, and it's recognized as a good one.
Taxes, Economy, and Trade:  Trump's tax position is good.  His economic experience is second to very few U. S. Citizens.  His trade view are more solid than any other candidate's.

In Cruz's favor, his free market mark isn't deserved either.

Trump is the go to guy because of his economic experience.  He is solid on other issues as well, but second to illegal immigration, our national debt and related matters are vitally important and need to be addressed.  Trump is the only candidate with the experience necessary to do that.

Cruz supporters are pleased to drop this bomb on the forum.

It isn't an accurate display on Trump.  As such it's actually a smear on Cruz when his supporters tout it as a reason to support Cruz.  What they should be doing is pointing out the obvious flaws in this ranking.  And RANK is the proper word here....
