The City of Wilmore has been asked by the Freedom From Religion Foundation to remove the cross mounted on top of a water tower at Asbury University.
In a letter emailed to Mayor Harold Rainwater on Sept. 29, FFRF staff attorney Rebecca Markert warns that it is unlawful for Wilmore to display a patently religious symbol such as a Christian cross on public property.
The Wilmore cross, displayed on the city water tower, unabashedly creates the perception of government endorsement of Christianity. It conveys the message to the nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population who are not Christians that they are not favored members of the political community, Markert wrote, citing a Supreme Court Case from 1989, which found that displaying a nativity scene on government property violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
We are aware that the water tower itself stands on the campus of Asbury University, a private Christian college, but this is irrelevant, Markert continued. Any reasonable observer would understand the city to endorse any messages on the water tower because the water tower has WILMORE printed on it in large letters, and because the tower is displayed on the citys website to represent the citys water and sewage services.
Rainwater, who is an associate professor at Asbury University in addition to serving as the citys mayor, said he is strongly against removing the cross and believes the city will be vindicated if FFRF pursues any legal action.
People have been contacting him, expressing support for keeping the cross and anger that an out-of-state organization is complaining about it, he said.
...
Rainwater said Asbury put the cross on the tower back when it owned the water tower.

Cross & Tower are on Private property?
REMOVE the name WILMORE.
Leave the cross.
Problem solved.
Screw ‘em. Why kowtow to the Left yet again?
Oh, right, the theory is that one can not establish a religion - funny that, one of the main cornerstones for establishing if a religion is really a religion or not is a marriage ritual - certainly the SCOTUS established a religion when it dictated that marriage can be between any two humans, no matter what gender?
The city never established the religion, it simply recognizes it, and is not congress establishing a religion, nor a city establishing a religion. That is an action which appears to only apply to SCOTUS.
Sometimes - admittedly in my darker moments - I wonder in what creative ways could groups like the FFRF be encouraged to SHUT UP and mind their own business!
How about we remove freedom from religion foundation from Wilmore? Sounds more beneficial to me.
Does the sign say “City of WILMORE” or just WILMORE?
If you want to win friends and influence people and you're an atheist, just live a good life and not piss people off.
When it comes to these FFR clowns, my thought have taken a medieval turn of late.
sure, as soon as the godless remove symbols of their religion from public view, like pornographic books, pornographic school lessons, pornographic school activities, all satanic symbols from public squares, etcd etc etc-
But of course their religious beleifs are exempt from the rules they impose on us
Put the word “BELIEVES” under “WILMORE”.
Wilmore,KY is the home of Evangelism Resources, a great Christian missionary organization.
What standing does Rebecca Markert and FFRF have in court to file such a lawsuit? What damage can she prove? What tort has been committed?
“No”

Dear Rebecca Market,
Go pound sand!
This is getting really pathetic. An organization named Freedom From Religion by its very name has what objective? There’s only one. They have a desire to wipe out any and all public displays of Christianity. Thereby in so doing creating not just a religiously neutral state but a secular humanist state. These weenies don’t want to defend the constitution. They simply want their religion of “nonbelief” to reign supreme over all the land. What miserable lives they have to lead.
More lawfare by the atheists. Their blanket assertions are lies and they have no case, but these schools and communities refuse to stand up to the bullies, which just encourages them more. Nobody, it seems, has moral courage anymore.
I’ll bet there is an empty space on the water tower, equal or larger in area than the Cross.
So the Freedom From’s have equal representation!
If the sight of a cross offends these FFRF idiots, why don’t they just gouge out their eyes, or go through life with their eyes closed like the monks in THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING.
Wonder if their keyboards still have a “T”.
I wonder why they don’t do something about this?
