I thought the flares were released to protect against heat seeking MANPADS (Stinger like SAM’s). Would be another holdover from their Afghan experience. Could be wrong, though.

As far as I can tell she is in Istanbul university and is anti-Jihadi. She could be a native Assyrian Christian Turk (there are a few of them left) and they have close ties in Syria or she could be a secular anti Jihad Muslim Turk. I can’t tell more beyond that. She is very attractive though.
