No, not that personal tragedy. His other personal tragedy. Despite 35 years in the Senate and seven more as VP, this is the very first thing his biggest fans want low-information voters to know about him. I wonder if Biden quietly signed off on this just like he quietly leaked that “do it for Beau” anecdote to Maureen Dowd.
But … it’s a good ad, no? However crass you may find this “He’s suffered enough so let’s make him president” campaign pitch, it’s a superb contrast with the RoboClinton. This is exactly the sort of thing the public likes about Biden and doesn’t see in her — warmth, humanity, relatability. Emphasizing his record against hers is silly given that each of them have the same credentials for the top job, namely, having served in the Senate and then ended up in the cabinet of the same Democratic president. They’re both old, have been in Washington for decades, and come from a more centrist wing of the party than Bernie Sanders does.
They both have endless connections among fatcat donors and operatives. There are only two sharp contrasts between them: Hillary would be the First! Woman! President! and Biden is a recognizably human human being. That’s your choice if you’re an undecided Democrat. Pat yourself on the back for shattering the glass ceiling by sending a crook to the White House or savor all the feels by sending an underwhelming presidential retread there to ease his grief instead. Makes the GOP voter’s “to Trump or not to Trump?” dilemma seem less bad, doesn’t it?
Washington Post’s Gist of the advertisement:
The 90-second spot does not mention his son’s death, only alludes to it, but it traces the arc of Biden’s 43-year career in Washington, beginning with the December 1972 car crash that left his first wife and daughter dead and his two sons in a hospital trying to rehabilitate.
“By focusing on my sons, I found my redemption,” the vice president says in the ad, using his own words to tell the story.
It comes from the “Yale Day” speech Biden delivered the day before the Ivy League school’s commencement, as he knew his son’s fight with cancer was unlikely to succeed. Beau Biden died two weeks after that speech.

VOTE BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT
He’s suffered enough -
Now it’s our turn.
I can already hear the Violins playing, and I haven’t seen the ad yet. There will be a Cello dirge in the background, maybe the bloated moan of a Tuba.
Pimping your dead wife and children. Lovely, just lovely.
I could never feel right about using a personal loss to advance myself. Even in college when I had a major loss I didn’t use it to get a grade changed for missing much of the work. I just could not do it. The professor never knew.
The legend of Beau Biden laying on his death bed urging his father to run for president reminds me of Knute Rockne describing George Gipp death bed scene and urging his team to go out there and win one for the Gipper (not RR). Rockne later admitted that he made the whole thing up.
It is a shame that any young person dies of brain cancer, but most brain cancer victims close to death cannot speak or recognize people. I think Biden is full of you know what.
Joe’s wife was a SHITTY driver and killed herself and their newborn. Joe continues to blame the helpless truck driver who had to live with Mrs. Biden’s mistake. Even claimed that the driver “drank his lunch” during the 2008 campaign, even though that was proven FALSE.
And what about Joe’s other son. The one who got a deferrment to get into the Navy Reserves and then was DD’d for being a cokehead? How’d he swing a deferrment that is literally IMPOSSIBLE in today’s climate?
Biden can go run for governor of Delaware then.
The world is in too much trouble to vote for a guy because he has dead family members.
Earth to Biden: WE ALL HAVE DEAD FAMILY MEMBERS!
Selling ads on the deaths of relatives is low even by Democrat standards.
“I could never feel right about using a personal loss to advance myself.”
And that’s why you’ll never make it in politics, kid!
Did Obamacare kill his son or was did he refuse it?
Watch Video? No thanks -- not feeling quite that masochistic today...
Oh, yeah. I’m gonna vote for an idiot as President of the United States, just because something bad happened to him.
Not in this lifetime!
He's been doing it for years. Campaigning with these "poor motherless boys" in tow. When he ran for president in 2008, he told a UD crowd that the truck driver "drank his lunch" - which was a blatant lie but the driver was deceased and could not sue him for defamation. The truck driver wasn't the one who ignored the stop sign.
The family of the truck driver cannot do anything legally to stop his lying although they did have a good interview in the local newspaper at the time (2008).
You go Joe! Remember these immortal words for your next campaign commercial, since you are thinking about death of loved ones.
“It’s 3 am. Next to her bedside, the phone of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rings. She picks the phone up and just as quickly drops it back in its cradle. Several hours later 4 Americans are dead in Benghazi. When asked about how this happened, she lied. Then she lied about the lie. And now when asked to hand over documents as to what really happened, those documents are mysteriously lost. If Hillary Clinton shirked her duties as Secretary of State, imagine what she will do as President.”
“I’m Joe Biden and I approve this aide. Not aide? Add? Like math?”
When the argument for him is “bad things keep happening all around me” do we really want to be around him? Or should we instead vote for candidate “Lucky.”
You know a candidate has nothing to offer if all he has is running on a dead son.
More parading the corpse for support and political profit. He’s lied about his wife’s death over and over again and like all good democrats he lies about this as well.
“Vote for me, I’m sad and pathetic.” won’t work very well anymore except among brainless democrats (and RINOs in the house and senate).
