Just 42 years ago, homosexuality was considered a diagnosable mental illness. In an ironic twist, it is now those who wantonly fear gay people that are being labeled as mentally ill.
According to findings recently published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, if you harbor homophobic views it’s likely you may also endorse some of the following dysfunctions: misogynism, psychoticism, uber-religiosity, immature coping mechanisms, [discomfort] with close relationships, and above average levels of anger, aggression, hostility, and hyper-masculinity.

This is a South Park episode in the making.
Actual phobias *are* mental problems. However, what the MSM calls “homophobia” is anything but an actual phobia. People who object to sodomy (and the omnipresent insistence that all people accept and celebrate it) aren’t exhibiting an “unreasonable fear” of that behavior.
Conversely, the leftist knee-jerk reaction to anything having to do with firearms *is* edging into “unreasonable fear” territory, and “hoplophobe” ought to become a much more prevalent accusation leveled against such people.
Another angle to take would be to ask what exactly is so bad about having a phobia? Are libs that insensitive towards people with actual mental problems that they use such a condition as a derogatory term for people who don’t like the things the libs do?

They see themselves as broken or at least sense something is not right, hence the need for constant public affirmation of their lifestyle or in the worst case the need to destroy anyone who makes them conscious of their condition.
