At the seventy-third annual Worldcon science fiction convention on Saturday night, social justice warriors did their best impression of the nightmare firemen of Ray Bradburys classic Fahrenheit 451, choosing to burn down the Hugo Awards and damage science fiction instead of seeing works of heretical authors outside of their exclusive clique winning awards.
Earlier this year, Breitbart reported on the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies voting slates, which swept many major categories for the Hugo Awards, science fictions coveted fan-voted awards. This years Hugos were hotly anticipated: fans and industry insiders alike were curious to see if social justice could come together to act with the uniformity of thought of the Borg to overcome the Puppys nominations.

I don’t follow the science fiction world. But I thought I heard some author was under attack for opposing homosexual marriage. Is this story part of that, that some people don’t want to honor someone’s work because of his social/political views not being liberal?????
Sounds like TOR books needs to receive a little TLC and authors and readers should find their outlets elsewhere.
IMO, the author needed to more clearly define the two groups so that his logic trail could be followed.
It’s difficult to tell who he is talking about when he uses the term “Puppies”, when he has already defined two groups of them. Which puppies?
In some instances that was rather obvious, and in others not so much.
I like the battle going on here, because at least one group of people will have driven home the issue of identity politics. That’s a lesson that every U. S. Citizen should have to sit down, study, and see for what it is.
Political correctness starting to corrupt Sci-fi, with some left-wing garbage winning awards.
Normally apathetic Sci-fi geeks got angry that bad writing was promoted, and were labeled reactionary for wanting “white male chauvinistic adventurers” as the only protagonists.
Just like the so-called “Gamergate” feud, PC-ness has gotten to the point of festering in pop culture that now normally apathetic people are upset.

Here we see Sturgeon’s Law in all it’s glory.
Welcome to ... Oh ... maybe 1995, or so.
That’s a good a summary as I have seen.
One thing to keep in mind that the Hugos were only chosen by 5,950 people who are supposed to represent all of fandom. Last year it was only 1,923 people voting. Bottom line the Hugo’s are tiny to the point of ridiculousness.

Did Harlan Ellison have another meltdown?
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud. Sturgeon himself called this Sturgeon's Revelation, and it first appeared in the March 1958 issue of Venture Science Fiction; he gave Sturgeon's Law as Nothing is always absolutely so.
Brad Torgersen is mentioned at the bottom of the article as a current Sad Puppies organizer. I have known Brad for many years and have met him several times. He was a Seattle liberal and is married to a minority. After joining the national guard, he experienced first hand the hate of the left directed at all things conservative. I got to watch his transformation from PC liberal to conservative warrior.
I am honored to be one of Brad’s friends and enjoy watching him help take down the liberal establishment in sci-fi.
Harlan wasn’t even there.
How about changing the awards so that “no award” isn’t a valid choice? It should count as the voter abstaining.
Agreed, the article is obtusely written to the point where I can’t understand who the players are and exactly how they did what they did. Especially obtuse are the prognostications for the future.

Background info:
A group of sci-fi writers noticed a while ago how the voting was rigged for the Hugo awards to only honor Leftist PC people in the industry. They formed the Sad Puppies group and basically stuffed the ballot box to help some conservatives get the award in 2014 and expose the leftist control. It worked.
The Hugo award organizers (SJW’s) then changed the voting rules to keep conservatives from winning. This year, there are first-line votes from people in the industry and also fandom votes. Two women should have won this year. Toni Weisskopf got 1216 first-line #1 votes and Sheila Gilbert got 754 first-line #1 votes. Both were record vote totals for the Hugo awards. The organizers (SJW’s) used fandom votes to give out “No Award” instead of awarding deserving women who were deemed “Women in Name Only” because they are conservative. As we all know, women’s rights ONLY means liberal women’s rights.
Waaaaay too much insider language going on here.
