Trump Joins Kasich as the Anti–Anti–Gay-Marriage Candidate
National Review ^ | 08/21/2015 | Maggie Gallagher

Posted on 08/21/2015 9:44:37 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Even as the Phillips family is struggling for financial existence against punishing government fines for refusing to bake a gay-wedding cake, Donald Trump is doubling down (along with Kasich) on his position as an anti–anti–gay-marriage Republican.

As Paul Dupont points out, Trump, when asked whether gay marriage was a dead issue, did not respond even by saying he would fight for religious liberty, or the right to make a living. He simply said a constitutional amendment is not going to pass, the Supreme Court has ruled, and it’s time to move on.

This is from an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

THR: You say you would have liked the states, rather than the Supreme Court, to decide on gay marriage. Have you been to a gay wedding?

Trump: Yes, I have. [Broadway theater owner] Jordan Roth. You know Jordan, right? Great guy.

THR: So is this a dead issue for the GOP at this point?

Trump: Some people have hopes of passing amendments, but it’s not going to happen. Congress can’t pass simple things, let alone that. So anybody that’s making that an issue is doing it for political reasons. The Supreme Court ruled on it.

He’s a fighter, allegedly, but not against the biggest powers that be.

So now we have a weird scenario when the princess candidate of the current establishment (John Kasich) and the alleged insurgent are both unwilling to fight against the redefinition of Christianity as bigotry.

I respect Trump enough to take him seriously as a candidate. He could win Iowa. Are there enough people willing to stand up against the real powers that be to either change the candidates’ mind, or oppose him?

This is a central untold drama of the election.

Its one of the reasons I'm sticking with Ted Cruz. His unequivocal support of traditional marriage, freedom of speech etc. If a candidate isn't at their ideological destination by now, they never will be.

National Review has no credibility any more.

Maggie Gallagher has been around and writing since the days of the "old" National Review. She's sound.

The Constitution confers authority to the states to legislate matters of marriage, gay OR straight.

I’m no fan of gay marriage either, but considering the economic turmoil this country is in, I’d rather a candidate fight now for better economic policy and focus on social matters later.

If you cut off your nose to spite your face, we coukld end up with another 4-8 years of liberal POTUS, and good luck having your morals represented after that.

You therefore must like his support of endless H1-B visas in lieu of supporting the American worker?

The Supreme Court striking down state laws by discovering "rights" that aren't there in the Constitution, thus violating the Tenth Amendment--in Obergefell v. Hodges on homo "marriage," as in Roe v. Wade on abortion--and for a candidate to be OK with that, that is NOT "having the Constitution guide his decisions"! And at the same time, citizens who cannot in good conscience go along with sodomite "marriage" are having their legitimate rights trampled on and are being punished by the government! I will not support any candidate who condones this type of disgrace, and that includes Trump.

Yes, they could denounce what the courts are doing to business owner’s right to religious freedom. Courts are giving rights to one group Anne taking away rights from another.

No, because it is a STATE matter!!! Fed Gov’t shouldn’t have an authority NOR opinion on whether a marriage is right or wrong. That’s the whole point of the Constitution!!! The Constitution gives certain powers to the states, civil matters such as marriage being one of them!

RE: Trump has a problem with me if he isn’t taking a stand on moral and family issues that’s any better than this. I won’t vote for any candidate who isn’t against same-sex “marriage.”

Donald Trump actually faced the same issue when the Miss USA pageant, which his organization owns, for some strange reason, chose a transvestite blogger who calls himself Perez Hilton to be a judge in 2009.

Carrie Prejean, who was a favorite to win, was asked whether she supported gay marriage and she forthrightly told everyone that she was brought up to believe in traditional marriage.

Here was her exact statement:

“Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And, you know what, in my country, in my family, I think that, I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman.”

The media attention intensified after Hilton added a video blog post to his website, and made comments there and elsewhere, disparaging Prejean and her answer to the question.

Perez Hilton called her a “dumb bitch” and stated: “She gave an awful, awful answer that alienated so many people.” He also told ABC News that she lost the crown because of how she answered the question.

Prejean has also stated that she believes that her answer cost her the crown.

Donald Trump, who owns most of the Miss Universe Organization, defended Prejean’s answer, saying that “Miss California has done a wonderful job” and that “It wasn’t a bad answer, that was simply her belief.” He then added that the question was “a bit unlucky” and that no matter which way she answered the question “she was going to get killed”

As a result of this controversy, Carrie Prejean had her background investigated and it was discovered that she violated the terms of her contract after a photograph of Prejean partially nude with her back turned to the camera appeared on a celebrity gossip blog.

Prejean defended the shots as legitimate modeling, and Miss USA owner Donald Trump agreed, stating, “We are in the 21st century. We have determined the pictures taken are fine” and that “in some cases the pictures were lovely.”

Trump went on to compare Prejean’s views on same sex-marriage as being in line with those of President Barack Obama.

Despite his initial support, Trump agreed to terminate Prejean’s contract on June 10, 2009, citing “continued breach of contract issues.”

BTW, I essentially agree with Trump on that issue but I don't lack the balls to call them H1b visa holders.

The same armchair advisors who wouldn’t vote for Trump because he wouldn’t hold up a gas can on TV and promise to burn PP to the ground.

And REAL immigration reform, too. Debate over SS”M” is the sort of thing that would throw Trump off message.

This is why I’m still intending to vote Cruz in the primaries.

If the GOP serves up ANY candidate that is a squish on fag-marriage, they will not get my vote. I’ll leave my ballot blank, just like I did with Romney (who helped facillitate fag-marriage in his own state when governmor), the first Republican, big office or small, I ever withheld my vote from. If the GOP does this, it can go burn in hell, and take the country with it. I honestly no longer care.

In the past I’ve looked for ideological purity in my candidate. I want them to be pro-life. I want them to be fiscally conservative. I want them to reduce the size and cost of government, reduce regulatory burdens, etc. I want them to be conservative on social issues. In short, I want to find a mini me.

I can’t say that during my five decades of voting, the government has shrunk, that budgets have been balanced, abortion has been reduced, etc. So, what have I got gotten in exchange for my vote?

Not much. Certainly not enough. Not compared to what the other side has gotten as the culture slides closer to Gomorrah every day.

Considering Trump now for other reasons. What if he were able to deliver on only one or two issues I care about? What if he could really secure the border, for example? What if he could restore the country’s lost economic might better than any other candidate? Are his chances of success on just or two topics better than the empty rhetoric I’ve received in the past, the same mini me rhetoric from the other candidates as I’m receiving now?

Of course, Trump will dissappoint me in some ways. He’s no mini me. What would Trump make worse? Will he make “gay” “marriage” any worse than it already is? Abortion access worse? Budget deficits worse?

Would I trade the little bit of nothing on many issues that I’ve gotten from the GOP-e in the past for a whole lot of something on a couple (but not all) of my big issues in the future?

It remains to be seen but I’m beginning to see reasons to support him.

You are glaringly missing the point! The SCOTUS wrongly STRUCK DOWN the authority of the states on this matter! That's the problem! And Trump is OK with it!

Yeah? So now that FEDGOV has usurped the Constitution, do you quit? Concede the game?

Because its NOT a STATE matter any more, we need a presidential candidate to state clearly that queer marriages will not be recognized and no federal money or support will go to states who allow this travesty.
