There are no poor in America. None.

I’ve tried to sell cheap then give away things like furniture with no takers, not even the usual Mexicans.

“despite the growing economy”

Do some homework msm. You are purposefully misleading, which is actually lying.

The unemployment rate, if calculated the same as during the great depression, has been higher than at any time during the great depression.

In other words, our economy for almost 7 years has been worse than the great depression!!!

Now Haiti, THAT'S poor. There isn't a single American who lives like that.

That is certainly your right and I understand. As for me, I don’t care if they’re illegal. I don’t want to see kids, ANY kids, go to bed hungry. I went to be hungry when I was a kid. I know what’s it like.

I always think of the Bible verse “I was hungry and you fed me.” He didn’t say “I was hungry and you fed me after I showed you my green card.”

Bless you for giving...period.

I stopped donating to food banks when my lazy disability drawing sports car driving land owning inlaws had a "friend" who would bring them all the "extras" like fresh tomatoes, canned goods, bread, butter, etc etc....

don't be surprised if this happens all over the country with the "extras".....

it would probably be better for us all to just donate a sack of groceries to the struggling hard working family down the street, or the old lady who doesn’t have much....

I agree and our family regularly does this but in a very discrete and unfortunately limited way. Several of those families we have helped have said they would share with others they personally know who had less than they, even though we knew quite well that they were really scrimping on their food intake to make what little they had last.

"I bet there is a large Hispanic component"

I'd like to see how emaciated many of the people are. I've seen numerous reports about food pantries and the people who frequent them in my local rag and tv stations. Many of the recipients of the free food look like they haven't missed many meals.

"Talking out of both sides of their mouth"

My own feeling is that it's a big scam. There is now an element of society who use these food banks in place of seeking a job and paying for food themselves.

Food is cheaper now than it was when I was growing up fifty-sixty years ago. Nobody I knew frequented food banks. I never heard of the term until about thirty years ago.

"it means that people will take free stuff."

Exactly. My area's food banks always talk about the increasing amount of people they feed. Nobody every does a study on how many of those people ares simply too lazy to work and buy food themselves. It's like if a bank handed out free money for the asking and then wondered why they were constantly running out of money.

"We had a benevolent food/clothing service"

I've got a bro in law who used to volunteer delivering food to "needy" families using his business's trucks. He became very disenchanted with the whole thing after one Christmas where after delivering many boxes of food to "needy" people, they got very little thanks. He remembers personally toting in many boxes of food to one woman and her family.

The woman wordlessly pointed to where she wanted the delivery people to put the boxes of food and clothing. After they completed the task, the woman simply pointed to the door without saying one word of thanks. That was the last Christmas my bro in law volunteered to do the charity thing.

At one congregation where I worked we had a clothing room. Each time we opened the doors for a clothing giveaway we saw the same people coming in. We later discovered that the clothes we gave away were winding up in consignment stores and garage sales.

There are obviously a number of truly needy people for whom I do not begrudge food and clothing. Which is why the wife and I try to give the Salvation Army most of our charity money. But so many people now take advantage of the kindness of others.

When I was a kid fifty plus years ago, most adults would rather have had an arm cut off than take charity. I guess things are a lot different today.

People don't understand that America's principles of charity come straight out of the teachings of Christ. And in spite of obvious abuses in the welfare system, millions of dollars make it to genuinely needy people. All this on a national federal level.

That's why local programs for food, clothing and holiday giveaways are targeted by con artists and deadbeats.

I remember a guy stopped at one congregation where I was preaching and asked the songleader if he could get some money for a transmission. He was headed through the area and his transmission was shot. He said he had a list of references and showed the songleader a piece of paper. The songleader took the paper and started to walk inside. The guy asking for the money asked where he was going. Our songleader said he was going to call the references. The guy got mad and said to forget it.

What he did next is unforgettable. He literally spun his tires leaving the parking lot. Kind of difficult to do if the transmission is gone.

I used to live across the street from an elementary school. Once a month they gave away bags of groceries to parents whose children went to the school. You can imagine who paid for those. Almost everyone who came to get the groceries were fat Mexicans, all driving better cars than me. Way better.

Overhead two twenty-somethings talking a few days ago. One told the other they had to eat their meals out because it was too expensive to go to the grocery store. It amazes me that although the parking lots at grocery stores are full and I see lots of people buying a lot of groceries, all the restaurants in our area are also busy.

In our day we not only tried to grow as much of our food as we could and we also cooked from scratch. Few younger women I know seem to do that any more. Neighbors also helped neighbors in time of need.

One of the things our business does is help young couples get out of debt and, without exception, the first thing we have to teach is how to make a menu for a week and prepare a grocery shopping list. Most recent couple was spending over $600 a month at fast food restaurants and ate all their meals out. It’s no wonder they don’t have any money.

When my wife and I go to restaurants, there are invariably a number of young families with a number of kids including infants. I never ate in a local restaurant until I was in my mid teens.

Unless we were on one of our rare trips to visit my grandparents in Detroit 600 miles away, me and my five siblings never ate in a restaurant. Usually my father drove straight through 12 hours of driving to get there to avoid restaurants and motels. We ate sandwiches my mother packed along the way.

Now we see numerous young families eating in medium scale, chain restaurants like Olive Garden, Outback, TGIF, etc.. If things are so bad, where are they getting the money?
