There is now an element of society who use these food banks in place of seeking a job and paying for food themselves.

At one congregation where I worked we had a clothing room. Each time we opened the doors for a clothing giveaway we saw the same people coming in. We later discovered that the clothes we gave away were winding up in consignment stores and garage sales.

There are obviously a number of truly needy people for whom I do not begrudge food and clothing. Which is why the wife and I try to give the Salvation Army most of our charity money. But so many people now take advantage of the kindness of others.

When I was a kid fifty plus years ago, most adults would rather have had an arm cut off than take charity. I guess things are a lot different today.
