"We had a benevolent food/clothing service"

I've got a bro in law who used to volunteer delivering food to "needy" families using his business's trucks. He became very disenchanted with the whole thing after one Christmas where after delivering many boxes of food to "needy" people, they got very little thanks. He remembers personally toting in many boxes of food to one woman and her family.

The woman wordlessly pointed to where she wanted the delivery people to put the boxes of food and clothing. After they completed the task, the woman simply pointed to the door without saying one word of thanks. That was the last Christmas my bro in law volunteered to do the charity thing.

People don't understand that America's principles of charity come straight out of the teachings of Christ. And in spite of obvious abuses in the welfare system, millions of dollars make it to genuinely needy people. All this on a national federal level.

That's why local programs for food, clothing and holiday giveaways are targeted by con artists and deadbeats.

I remember a guy stopped at one congregation where I was preaching and asked the songleader if he could get some money for a transmission. He was headed through the area and his transmission was shot. He said he had a list of references and showed the songleader a piece of paper. The songleader took the paper and started to walk inside. The guy asking for the money asked where he was going. Our songleader said he was going to call the references. The guy got mad and said to forget it.

What he did next is unforgettable. He literally spun his tires leaving the parking lot. Kind of difficult to do if the transmission is gone.
