Seattle Restaurants Suffer Worse Job Loss Since The Great Recession

According to a report released Sunday by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the $15 minimum wage has caused Seattle restaurants to lose 1,000 jobs — the worst decline since the 2009 Great Recession.

“The loss of 1,000 restaurant jobs in May following the minimum wage increase in April was the largest one month job decline since a 1,300 drop in January 2009, again during the Great Recession,” AEI Scholar Mark J. Perry noted in the report.

But they care. Therefore they can’t be blamed.

Waitresses making $15 an hour no longer getting tips, many of them are taking home less money. Plus businesses have slashed free meals and free parking in some places.

Any predictions on what happens next?

I’m going with severe restrictions on terminating employment, closely followed by claims of racism.

Maybe the Hippies in charge will begin to feel the pain when they can’t get service at their favorite restaurant or watering hole. Ya think?

Just 1000 jobs? Shoot, raise it to $20/hr, that will make up the difference.

Heads up nyc. Coming to you soon. And, once a lot of them found out that their new yearly income would kick them off some of the “free” stuff, they started requesting fewer hours so they could stay on the “free” stuff list. Weird how that works huh?

That number will increase once the automation is put into place. There’s no doubt that anyone who owns a restaurant is looking into the long term savings afforded with automation.

Sometimes I wonder if the underlying motive for this is to drive the “minimum wage crowd” OUT of the cities, so the white liberals can gentrify as cheap real estate and rentals become available. They only care about “diversity” when it doesn’t affect their own interests.

After all, one doesn’t hear much about the gentrification taking place in the Mecca of SF which is driving minorities out and into Oakland and Richmond

Just a coincidence. Bush’s fault. Greedy capitalist restaurant owners. I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn’t have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn’t come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts . . .

The government doesn’t have the right to set an hourly rate.
The people who voted for the dems have themselves to blame.

She will insist that it is a conspiracy by restaurant owners to punish the city parents. I’ve personally seen the same leftist argument in at least three different countries.

Look at the bigger picture and you will see the $15 min wage will make it impossible for lower and even middle class to live in the inner cities.

Only the wealthy elite will be able to afford to live in the inner cities.

This fits right in with Obama’s plan to move the inner city trash out to the burbs and redevelop the inner city areas where the trash now lives for the wealthy elite.

So ridiculous. I bartended/waitressed (my family owned a couple of places) from the time I was 16 until I got my first "real" job at about 24.

I had jobs where I made ridiculous amounts of money in tips. In fact, getting my first "real" job was painful. I worked all week for what I could make in one shift often times.

With a nod to Paul Shanklin...
They were next in line.

At a fast-food joint on the edge of town,
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
lost their favorite bar run by their favorite pal.

'cause if there's one thing that this world needs
It's a minimum wage that will take the lead

And they dined with pride
in a Yugo.
