Conservative? Donald Trump supported auto bailouts in 2008.
The Daily Caller ^ | 4/20/2011 | Chris Moody

Although Donald Trump is trying to re-invent himself as a conservative for a possible bid for president in 2012, reminders of his prior support for Democrats and big government polices keep adding up. The latest: The Donald supported the auto bailout in 2008.

“I think the government should stand behind them 100 percent,” Trump told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto nearly three years ago. “You cannot lose the auto companies. They’re great. They make wonderful products.”

Faced with crushing debts caused by poor management and high labor costs, GM and Chrysler requested federal assistance to keep the firms afloat, and were granted a $25 billion loan in the fall of 2008. President George Bush then secured more than $17 billion for the companies.

This occurred months before the birth of the Tea Party, but conservatives were outraged.

Not Trump. A longtime advocate of sweetheart deals between corporation and state, the real-estate developer went all in for the deal.

“[Y]ou have to try and save the companies,” Trump said in a separate 2008 Fox News interview. “And I think you can easily save the companies.”

The Club for Growth, a free-market advocacy group that opposed the bailouts, blasted out a statement Wednesday knocking Trump for his support for bailouts over bankruptcy, and cited that the real-estate mogul had succesfully filed for bankruptcy himself four times in the past 20 years.

“If there’s anyone who should know the value of filing for bankruptcy, it’s Donald Trump. He should have known that the $13.4 billion government bailout of the auto industry just put off the inevitable while putting taxpayers at risk,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “Bailouts and nationalizing whole industries can cripple free markets and has hampered our economic recovery. We need our next President to understand that economic freedom leads to growth and prosperity for all, and that the government should never be in the business of picking winners and losers.”

An old article, but relevant in today's elections as Trump is trying to re-invent himself again.

We have been so thoroughly screwed by obama and the GOP since 2008 that all I care about is what he or any other candidate plans to do with the situation we face now.

I support Trump the candidate. No, I don't want him as the nominee and I don't think that this time next year he will be.

But many the other 15 will see that the public doesn't want timidity from their leaders ... or timidity tempered with lashing out solely at your own party.

Two issues:

I gather you still continue to support criminal illegals
murdering and raping Americans.

I gather you still continue to support giving the Mullahs
nuclear weapons, and not using the words “Islam”
and “terrorism” in the same sentence.

Given the last 10 years, I consider bailouts to be a key Conservaitve value. At least the Cons sure like to do it.

I agree...but the question becomes WHAT does Trump plan to do? So far, we haven’t gotten many answers.

“You cannot lose the auto companies. They’re great. They make wonderful products.”

Great companies that make wonderful products tend to be profitable and do not require government assistance.

I really don't care what he has said years ago - most all of the GOP candidates have flipped and flopped particularly those working in the political field.

I CURRENTLY SUPPORT TRUMP BECAUSE HE APPEARS TO BE THE ONLY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE WHO HAS THE FINANCIAL WHEREWITHALL TO NOT HAVE TO COW TOW TO THE POLITICAL FUNDING MACHINE - e.g. Rove and the Chamber of Crony Commerce - AND KNOWS HOW TO SHOUT BACK AT THE MOST HATED ORGANIZATION IN AMERICA TODAY - THE MEDIA.

You know what?

I care more about him kicking elite GOP *AND* Dem a$$ than what he did in the past

They have all done many many times worse.

WE DO NEED TO GET HIM TO TALK ABOUT GUTTING THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT and stop being a single issue campaign mislabeled as anti-immigration by the praetorian media

I supported the bail-outs. Auto manufacturers affect far too large a sector of our economy. But I think we should be raising import tariffs so bail-outs aren’t necessary.

It doesn’t matter.

Americans have had it with the direction of this country, which is straight down.

And Americans have had it with the useless, feckless, worthless, pointless, lying GOP, and from what I can see, none of its standard candidates have a snow ball’s chance in Hell of becoming president, and it wouldn’t matter if they did become president anyway.

If someone says they are going to change the direction of this failing country, then that is who they are going to go with.

I can’t tell you if Trump is lying or not, but I can tell you that the GOP and its candidates are lying, because that is all they ever do.

As opposed to the other dozen or so that are running that are? He is the only one with the stones, thus far, to keep fighting back...and that is VERY refreshing...hopefully contagious...but, I doubt it.

I’m scared because Trump doesn’t have to be the candidate BUT almost none of the politicians are smart enough, strong enough, or care enough to stand up for this country.

My God we are seeing racism, illegality and crazy leftism every day and no one is opposing it. They literally are allowing the destruction of America.
