County Clerks Resign Nationwide After Gay Marriage Ruling

County clerks across the country are resigning after the June 29 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage.

Just a few days after the monumental ruling, an entire county clerk office in Tennessee resigned. Decatur County Clerk Gwen Pope and both of her deputy assistants, Sharon Bell and Mickey Butler, resigned, saying the order clashed with their religious beliefs. All three were long-time employees of the clerk’s office. Pope told The Jackson Sun they didn’t want to make the news.

"It's kind of sort of like you don't want to draw attention to yourself for any reason," she said. "That's not why we're doing this. Not doing it in any way to draw attention to us. It's for the glory of God. He's going to get all the glory."

Though the group has no back-up plan, Pope added, “I honestly believe God will take care of us.”

But they weren’t the only ones.

The Monday following the SCOTUS ruling, a 24-year-veteran of an office in Little Rock, Arkansas, resigned. Cleburne County Clerk Dana Guffey told her superiors that it would go against her “moral conviction” to marry same-sex couples. She elaborated to CBS News that she “didn’t hate anybody” and it “wasn’t a decision she made lightly.”

In Grenada, Mississippi, County Clerk Linda Barnette made the same difficult decision to leave her job or face the consequences. Barnette, like Guffey, had also worked at the same office for more than 24 years.

She wrote in her letter of resignation, “I choose to obey God rather than man.” The New York Daily News’ Nicole Hensley bashed Barnette’s decision, saying, “Most clerks who objected to the Court’s ruling grudgingly complied or simply delegated the responsibility to staffers.” Hensley further complained, “she didn’t have to do it this way” but “evidently” Guffey “wanted to make a statement.”

Though the media may not understand why clerks are resigning, it continues to happen across the country. The most recent case happened in Texas. AP reported that Rusk County Clerk Joyce Lewis-Kugle resigned July 9 after explaining that she “could not in good conscience issue marriage licenses to same couples.”

Even more clerk offices have attempted to send same-sex couples to other offices rather than issue licenses themselves. The Christian Examiner reported that cases of clerks refusing to comply have happened in Hood County, Texas and Rowan County, Kentucky. Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore issued an order saying that clerks could refuse same-sex marriage licenses for 25 days under state law, which still recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman.

And they get financially bled dry since the counties will not back them. One person cannot fight the behemoth and that is what the left wants. We will only win when we start to ban together and openly rebel.

They need to sue for religious oppression. They need to sue for breach of contract. When they took those jobs, there was no requirement to violate their faith in the execution of their jobs.

So don’t even bother trying to imagine that. Instead try to imagine it’s early 1933. The National Socialist German Workers Party is the largest party in parliament and thus President von Hindenburg has appointed its leader, Herr Hitler, as Chancellor - not der Führer, just Chancellor, the same position Frau Merkel holds today. And the National Socialist German Workers Party starts enacting its legislative programme, and so a few weeks later the Civil Service Restoration Law is introduced. Under this law, Jews would no longer be allowed to serve as civil servants, teachers or lawyers, the last two being professions in which Jews are very well represented.

But that wily old fox Hindenburg knows a thing or two. So as president he refuses to sign the bill into law unless certain exemptions are made - for those who’ve been in the civil service since August 1st 1914 (ie, the start of the Great War), and for those who served during the Great War, or had a father or son who died in action. And the practical effect of these amendments is that hardly any Jew in the public service has to lose his job.

And so in April 1933 it would be easy to say, if you were a middle-class German seeking nothing other than a quiet life, that, yes, these National Socialist chappies are a bit uncouth, but the checks and balances are still just about working. What’s the worst they can do?

Paul von Hindenburg died the following year, and his amendments were scrapped.

That’s Germany’s civil service in 1933. What of America’s civil service in 2015?

So observant Christians will no longer be able to serve as town or county clerk. Are comparisons really so “lunatic”? The logic of the 1933 Civil Service Restoration Act is that the German public service will be judenrein. The logic of the 2015 Supreme Court decision is that much of the American public service will be christenrein - at least for those who take their Scripture seriously. That doesn’t strike me as a small thing - even if one thought it were likely to stop there.

Rather chilling, no? ~Q

Exactly. The left is laughing its collective butt off.

This is not good at all.

Christians are leaving so many important places of influence:

Generals and chaplains in the military, clerks and judges in the government. Soon, those at “Christian”colleges and nonprofit organizations.

They changed the rules *after* they were hired. New hires need to understand the rules. Old hires need to be given accommodations.

That WOULD be interesting to see as class action... but in Calvinball courts the goal is not the goal.

And so it happens until God laughs at them.

They have been given the gift that they will not be able to use without destroying themselves.

The left will just reply, “good, they don’t deserve to be working in those positions anyway! If you don’t want to perform marriages, then just quit the business. If you don’t want to bake cakes, then just don’t own bakeries, if you don’t want to take the photos, then just don’t own a photography business!”

“Oh, and sew this yellow star, wait make it a yellow cross, on your shirts!”

wondering if Christians in other parts of this government should also begin making plans for their departure.

My thoughts exactly. I do greatly admire the County Clerks that are stepping down out of moral conviction however. I does take guts to do that but a spine of steel would fight this in the courts. The limiting factor here is the millions in legal and court fees that would take -- and the Left never has a problem finding the funds to put up such a battle.

I also find it very interesting that it seems to be only counties in the South where the clerks are stepping down.

I think it will be quite interesting to see the election results from these counties.

Some things are evident here

(1) Evil has power
(2) So does God, but it’s faith that makes that manifest
(3) Faith is declining

The important thing to notice is that scripture never promised a decency share among the nations to Christians. The America situation has been misunderstood. It has been looked at as though it were the glory of people when it needed to be looked at as the glory of God. God is not chintzy but He does insist on being believed in. He won’t give gifts to the indifferent.

Well let me add my prayer to the “God bless them.” Those who follow the Lord’s leading can take short term hits, but they will be rewarded with long term gain, and that in terms that glorify God’s kingdom.
