Jonah Goldberg: Trump Fans, It's Time for an Intervention
National Review Online ^ | 7-11-2015 | Jonah Goldberg (or…)

Isnip)......I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake. I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. I’m watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage......(snip)

Lifelong liberal record = liberal

Yes but I'm not sure he wasn't just following the zeitgeist. I doubt he knows much about liberalism or conservatism at least not until lately.

I support what Trump is saying because it needs to be said by someone with a national audience. The left has untold numbers of people that get people talking about even the most radical leftist talking points. I say let Trump be our fringe guy with an audience.
I will write in Ted Cruz in 2016 no matter who the republicans nominate.

I've been a subscriber to NR mag for a number of years, and I would hazard about half the writers are social conservatives. But their big guns (Williamson, Goldberg, etal) are not social conservatives.

Even some of their other chief writers like Charles Cooke, who is a huge pro-gun guy, have no problem with homo marriage. Ditto for Williamson who is the big rising star at the mag. And they tolerated Steyn, maybe the biggest star in the conservative firmament, forced out of the mag by some homosexual dweeb like Jason Steorts. That by itself is a gross miscarriage of justice.

It seems many straight talkers have been forced out of the mag....John Derbyshire, Ann Coulter, and recently Mark Steyn. I think Williamson and Goldberg better watch themselves before they're kicked out by the homosexual clique that seems to running things there.

Still too cowardly to remove your prohibition which prevents me from speaking directly to you, I see.

Probably just as well, I shellacked you pretty good the last time I did so, which of course, is why you banned me.

I’ve got your number.

If Giuliani, or Jeb Bush for that matter, was willing to take on the Democrats, would you still support them, in spite of knowing they stand with the Democrats in private?

I would not vote for Jeb under any circumstances, and it has nothing to do with his politics. It's his looks and mannerisms -- always seems to be hiding something. He is arrogant.

I only WISH I could vote for Rudy again. My greatest wish was that he had won the primary and beat Obama. You want to compare Rudy vs. Obama, or any other Rhino vs. Rudy? Good luck electing a President as tough on terrorists as Rudy would have been. If it's Rudy's Halloween costume that was so upsetting to you, well, good luck electing an opponent of gay marriage.

Don't shoot the messenger. Good luck to any R who thinks the media will allow it to happen.

Our choices seem to be between a nationalist moderate, and a bunch of globalist moderates, and maybe one or two globalist conservatives. Pick your poison.

National Review sold out to the Left a long time ago——and they are part of the Dialectic to move us into totalitarian control (confusion).

They are NEVER clear-—and NEVER promote TRUTH/GOD anymore....as much as I like it when Jonah IS RATIONAL——he can have some Common Sense.......but he also loves to be “in with Flynn”——and make the millions and not be demonized 24/7 and alienated in the Alinsky manner.

All main-stream institutions are controlled by the irrational LEFTIST sodomites, now-—ALL-—even SCOTUS with the Marxist Kagan and the bribed and controlled “Justice” Roberts.

Really sick how Jonah and that Olsen are promoting tribal pagan, satanic ethics of sodomy and not embracing Natural Law Theory and Right Reason according to Natural Law-—our American Justice System being thrown out (unconstitutionally) for a tribal, Marxist system of Rule of Man..

They embrace a Vice System-—so they can remain popular with the controllers-—just like the Catholic Church with the anti-pope.

Jonah needs to be CLEAR and ONLY PROMOTE TRUTH——and we see Trump vilified for simply stating the Truth. It is true that Trump can be a plant......it is what Leftists do-—Lie and Lie and sneak in people who appear to be what they are not.

Who knows who is lying?????? But-—at least state the Truth about Rule of Law-—illegal immigration, vile evil degrading vice of sodomy and how flipping 2000 years of Western Civ ethics to the tribal, pagan Afghani harem boy IRRATIONAL ethics is “Good”.

Come on, Jonah——Truth will set you FREE!!!!

You nailed it. It is Trump’s message and his unapologetic exposure of the rape of our country by illegals that has caught fire with the grass roots.

On the economy he speaks from a position of accomplishment and strength, while giving hope of changing our economic environment for the better.

Do I think he can accomplish any of these things better than Cruz? No, but he has put them front and center where they need to be in this election.

We need someone who will actually act on their issues.

I couldn't agree more.

he’s doing a damned good job of separating the wheat from the chaff

That should make these folks happy, don't you think? Are clueless how to take advantage of something in their favor?

“It’s easier for a party to make one guy the villain than it is to admit that his ascent shows how badly they’ve screwed up all these years.”

This actually explains it all. No need to say anything else. The party has destroyed itself and we aren’t going to forget what they have done. After all, we are conservatives first and always......above all else. And they hate us with a passion.

Oh, and for the record I only support proven conservatives, that leaves Trump out.

I would have supported Cruz but he seems hell bent on outsourcing American jobs.

Why doesn’t Goldberg beg GOP candidates not to ignore the issues that concern GOP voters instead of begging GOP voters to ignore Trump.

They're riding the wave. Follow the money.

You’re a brave man.

This is an excellent article which points out, politely, why the “conservative” echo chamber around Donald Trump is unhealthy not only for conservatism, but for America.

Thank you for the post.

Trump has a particular function, and I find it very interesting and entertaining. I support him BEING THERE.

I agree fully!!! And I love that last night at dinner, with my liberal sister-in-laws, that they too are happy with Trump's focus (shocking!) because turns out they do not support Obama’s executive immigration actions or amnesty. Who knew??? They are not one issue voters by any means but many out there are, so I'm hoping Trump forces all who support amnesty to put both of their feet in their mouths so far that it chokes them... this includes Hillary, Jeb, left or right... and in the end it's Cruz/Walker who the voters love! I can dream, right?

I've been a FReeper for almost 13 years and I've seen this same BS play out in every single election. People claim Trump is saying these things because no one else will. If that's true, where the hell were these people in 08? We had two very solid border control candidates in Tancredo and Hunter. I ended up settling on Hunter simply because he was more of a full package candidate guy and had a history of actually getting things done on the border. ("Hunter's wall" is a favorite photo op site for candidates.) Unfortunately in 08 the Fred Thompson show was sucking all the air out of the race and clearing a path for John McCain.

Duncan Hunter at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the section of border fence he got built. He was ignored by the same FReepers who now claim Donald Trump is our only hope.

But one thing is certain, it does not mean he is no longer a liberal.

I think this is difficult for most freepers to understand but Trump is neither a liberal or a conservative. He is and has been all his life a "promoter". Promoters know how to promote. They don't necessarily believe in what they promote but they do know how to promote. My read on anything Trump said or contributed for in the past was it was likely connected with something or someone he was promoting.

Because of this I cannot extrapolate past or current comments or past or future behavior as to what Trump believes. With a promoter it is possible they don't have a central belief system except that which advances their current project.

Liberals, the press and GOPe are also promoters who have few core beliefs except that which advances their product. We liberals, I know what that their product is and I do not want it. With Trump, I don't think anyone is quite sure what he is promoting just yet. Perhaps he is simply improving his personal brand, perhaps he wishes to be bought through indirect favors, perhaps he really wants to promote capitalism or conservatism. I know just like fish gotta swim, promoters got to promote and sooner or later we will know what Trump is promoting.
