As Book Is Released, Ted Cruz Sours on His Role Model
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Jun 30, 2015 | JANET HOOK

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, in his new memoir “A Time for Truth,” confides that when he was a young lawyer learning how to argue a case in the Supreme Court, he had a role model: John G. Roberts, whom he described as “a brilliant Supreme Court lawyer,” the “best advocate” of his generation.

That would be the same John Roberts, now chief justice of the Supreme Court, that Mr. Cruz has been lambasting of late for last week’s ruling upholding a key piece of President Barack Obama’s signature health-care law.

“When I began practicing, I worked hard to emulate his argument style,’’ Mr. Cruz writes in the memoir, which goes on sale in book stores Tuesday. “You do not get to be the best Supreme Court advocate of your generation, as John was, without having an exquisite understanding of what makes each of the sitting justices tick.”

But after last week’s court decision, Mr. Cruz abandoned all those superlatives and said in a radio interview that Mr. Roberts had “put on an Obama jersey” and betrayed his “judicial art.”

Mr. Cruz was so enraged by the health-care ruling — as well as last week’s decision, not supported by Mr. Roberts, upholding gay marriage — that Mr. Cruz is calling for a constitutional amendment that would require Mr. Roberts and other Justices to stand for election every 8 years.

Mr. Cruz’s account of his past admiration for Mr. Roberts is just one small vignette in a 342- page memoir that reaches back to the Texas senator’s father Rafael Cruz’s roots in Cuba, where he tried to join Fidel Castro’s rebel forces to fight the Batista regime before fleeing to the U.S. The senator details his own rise through Princeton, Harvard Law School, clerking for Supreme Court Justice William H.

He is right about Roberts. Roberts is an enigma and I have questioned his moral judgment. He also appears to have some abnormal health problems, possibly epilepsy.

Roberts is happy with gay marriage. He used the old Arlen Specter tactic of voting right when it has no effect and voting left when it actually matters.

Roberts is no patriot.

Roberts used to look like a role model, just like Benedict Arnold. General Arnold completed several tasks well before he openly became a traitor.

What he admired was the arguing style of Roberts, not what he was arguing about.

Benedict Arnold is someone that we best remember as his betrayal is an excellent lesson.

He was a fair patriot who supported America’s independence but his vanity and pride made him resent others who he felt were getting rewards that should have been his. It’s almost the tale of a scorned lover looking to destroy his former love. When the British promised him material favor in exchange for his betrayal, he took it.

He was an excellent general and was as good as any of the greats of his time but his desire to be important and wealthy was greater than his moral dignity. And that’s why we should remember him and his lesson. Do right at all times.

He died lonely and regretful.

Come on Fungi, I've had a form of epilepsy all my life and I've always performed my job in the most competent manner.

Yep...Arnold made his home in England, but even those he was a traitor for the British, the British still viewed him as a traitor nonetheless.

There are many forms, how do you know his condition is not affecting him? He certainly was not the person he claimed to be; his health status, which by law is secret, could be a reason.

I like Cruz, that being said I also do not believe he is a Natural Born Citizen. I would vote for Cruz in a second but I believe the Dims are waiting in the wings to bring up this issue.
I think Roberts is a wolf in sheaves clothing and has always been. We do not need an election every 8 years, what we need is strict term limits.
We have 3 maybe decent justices the rest are total a$$holes. If I have offended the mods or anyone else with my comments you may tell me that loose lips sink ships or may remind yourself that there is still a 1st amendment. You may blame it on vodka or the fact that my Grandmother was affected by the same problem that you claim Roberts may have. My Grandmother in her worst days would never have thought for a moment that same sex marriage made any damn sense.

From the US Department of State, since 1790 the law is ...

7 FAM 1131.2 Prerequisites for Transmitting U.S.
Citizenship
(TL:CON-68; 04-01-1998)
Since 1790, there have been two prerequisites for transmitting U.S. citizenship to children born abroad:
(1) At least one natural parent must have been a U.S. citizen when the child was born. The only exception is for a posthumous child.
(2) The U.S. citizen parent(s) must have resided or been physically present in the United States for the time required by the law in effect when the child was born.

Well he wrote all about how awesome he is and now he is taking it back. I don’t think he had good judgment to begin with. Most of us knew he was an awful pick for Supreme Court.....many many on here said this at the time, but of course the GOP knew better.

They didn’t “uphold” the law, they rewrote it on the fly to achieve the desired outcome. “Upholding” it would have meant ruling that the law was enforceable as written.

Pride goes before a fall. The arrogance of the Supreme Court majority is an example of the hubris of the liberal world view that does not regard God or reason. They are herd animals just following each other and getting a sense of rightness by being with the incrowd. The left attacks in a very snide and superior way as a way to intimidate, this is how they get many converts especially among young college students. The students are swept along with many of the other students, those who follow their leftist teachers become the teachers' pets. The left has been at this for a long time and this is how they achieve consensus. The sense of unshakable faith in their own preening wonderfulness is setting these leftists up for a big surprise because sooner or later they are going to be shown for the fools that they are. Wait till they begin to see the can of worms they have opened up. The gay marriage decision is going to create one big mess after another, they are going to look like the incompetent fools that they are.
