LONDON — June 19 will mark the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta — the great charter of rights and freedoms drawn up by the Catholic Abbots of England’s Catholic monasteries and the feudal barons of the English counties and presented to King John to sign.

Queen Elizabeth II will visit Runnymede on the Thames, where the signing took place, and various ceremonies and commemorative events are planned around the country for the occasion.

But what most people perhaps do not recognize is the central role played by the ROMAN CATHOLIC Church in all of this.

Christian Elements

But what does the Magna Carta actually say?
It opens with a statement from King John, “before God,” stating that the charter has been drawn up “to the honor of God and the exaltation of the holy Church and the better ordering of our kingdom.”

It then lists all of the bishops and abbots who were responsible for drawing up the charter, beginning with the primate of England; Stephen, the archbishop of Canterbury; and including a member of the papal household, various bishops and various earls and barons. And then comes the first of the rights established by the charter: “That the English Church shall be free and shall have its rights undiminished and its liberties unimpaired.”

I like to put these events on my desktop screen on a daily basis, most often baseball history from the first half of the 20th century but sometimes others; for this event earlier this week I did and noticed in a lot of the paintings of John signing that document, the church representative was right there in the middle of the drawings.

Interesting... this article (King John Tried to Butcher the Authors of Magna Carta), says:
Few people recall that Pope Innocent speedily sought to annul the charter and formally absolved King John of any obligation to obey Magna Charta.

I can see why so many people are turned off from Church these days after the Vatican just released it most recent Papal Bulls...

As a Catholic, I’ve never be so infuriated with the leadership of my Church. This is on par with the homosexual-pedophile priest scandal and cover up.

At this unfortunate time and what is happening at the Vatican, it is hard to find all the good things the Church did throughout the centuries. Admittedly, there were mistakes, but do not forsake the good for the perfect.

As an aside, Sunday June 21 is my monthaversity as a FReeper. I want to thank those who welcomed me here and the replies were typically smart, funny and inventive. I received only one dressing down from a VIP(very important poster), but I did not understand what I did wrong. I just don’t go to the threads he/she offers.
There is one thing. I remember reading posts from someone with whom I almost always agreed. The handle was Miss Marple and I have seen her name in a ping list, but have not seen a post in years. I hope she? is alright.
Most Freepers are the best. Thanks again.

Human nature to try to give themselves glory - both then and now on FR.
