The man fatally shot by anti-terrorism officers in Boston on Tuesday and the suspect arrested Tuesday night in Everett had conspired to kill a police officer, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the case.

“We believe the intent was to behead a police officer,” one official said Wednesday morning. “We knew the plot had to be stopped. They were planning to take action Tuesday.”

(snip)They had a brief exchange near a bus stop, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation, before Rahim lunged with the knife. The weapon was more than a foot long with a nearly 8-inch blade, according to an evidence picture.

My old neighborhood.

Back in the sixties, way back then, we had a huge Arab population.

Mostly Syrian and Lebanese.

Aha! And just HOW did they come by this knowledge?

I'll bet it was by using the provisions contained in The Patriot Act.

No. Wait. That can't be. They don't actually use The Patriot Act to surveill people, they just use it to collect metadata.

So, how DID they come by this plot? And why don't they do more of that?

Undercover? Someone ratted? Some aspiring terrorist too big for his ego left obvious clues in messages?

Were any of them Muslims in those days? Any I've met were Christians.

Someone snitched..
Guess this ain’t like the old days when the likes of Boston FBI agents (Connolly, Morris, Rico) conspired with gangsters (Bulger, Flemmi). Doing their job, not turning a blind eye to crime...

Amazingly, I couldn’t find the words “Police are baffled as to the motive” or “appears to be random act” or “there are no links to terrorism”

The words “...described him as a highly observant ...” are enough to give the motive.

They were mostly Christians, as you say. But I imagine the demographics have changed a lot in 50 years.

That being said, There were a lot of bomb threats and actual bombs in those days. One was left on the steps of the Lebanese Social Club, and horrible disabled the Bomb Squad officer who tried to disarm it. In West Roxbury, Roslindale, and neighboring Hyde Park there were several church burnings that were never solved.

My Jr. high school (The Shaw in West Roxbury) used to have regular Friday afternoon bomb threats. At the time we thought it was “hippies”, but looking back, I wonder....

And, in 1984, while in Israel, I was chatting with a West Bank Arab who said he had LOTS of friends and relatives in Roslindale.

Oddly enough, Patriot Act provisions are only rarely used against terrorists and potential terrorists. However, there are a huge number of other surveillance systems independent of the Patriot Act, such as:

NarusInsight, the replacement for CARNIVORE (later renamed DCS1000), created by a subsidiary of Boeing, which is how the FBI directly monitors email and electronic communications. CARNIVORE was implemented in October 1997.

CALEA, the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (1994), which creates back doors in communications and Internet companies, allowing federal agencies to monitor all telephone, broadband internet, and VoIP traffic in real-time.

If the FBI and others don’t want to request companies first, they use DCSNet and the related Red Hook system, which do so surreptitiously.

These were all highly efficient systems, as well as many others not mentioned, and worked quite well against terrorists and terrorism. What the Patriot act did was increase the amount of surveillance a hundred fold, but the vast majority of that surveillance is not directed at known or suspected terrorists, but at everyone else.

“We spy on everybody because we can. Screw ethics.”

At the time we thought it was “hippies”, but looking back, I wonder....

Hippies is a misnomer. Hippies were scruffy dropouts from conventional society much like beatniks. The bombers (Weathermen and the like) were mostly scruff college Marxists acting much like the European immigrant bombers just before WWI. Don't confuse the scruffy. The laissez faire communal lifestyle of the Hippies is unlike the communist fascism admired by the Weathermen.

The knife:

"Military Style, "over a foot long", and "almost 8" blade" -- sounds like a Ka-Bar Tanto.

The standard USMC Ka-Bar is 11 7/8" long, with a 7" blade...

~~~~~~~~~~~
The former sounds/looks like what a JihaNinja Wanna-bee might choose
