The decline of Rand Paul
washingtonpost.com ^ | May 26, 2015 | Dana Milbank

Rand Paul took a left turn on his journey to the Republican nomination, and now his hopes now seem to be headed south.

The libertarian senator from Kentucky’s new book, “Taking a Stand,” came out Tuesday, and it is chock full of lines that would position Paul well — if he were running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

On the environment: “You’ll find I’m a tree hugger, literally…I’m a Republican who wants clean air, clean water, and the life-extending miracle of electricity. I compost.”

He composts or is compost. It was purely fantasy that he even thought he had chance, as Republican or with any party. Would be interesting to see him switch to Dems and run against Clinton and Sanders. He’d fit right in.

Who disagrees with that?

On Wall Street: “Only in a world of crony capitalism would bankers whose faulty decisions caused bankruptcy be allowed to cash out as the middle class absorbs the losses.”

Who disagrees with that?

On his party: “Right now, the Republican brand sucks. I promised Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, that I would stop saying the GOP sucks, and I will (except for this last time).”

Who disagrees with that?

Just wondering here what is outside the Republican mainstream?

Paul is correct the connected wealthy did not suffer during the 2008 recession while the middle class and elderly savers took it on the chin. Thanks to Republican President Bush and his Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson (former Goldman Sachs Chairman) the Wall Street banks and investment firms were bailed out and paying multimillion dollar bonuses a year later. In addition Bush/Paulson gave us TARP and the initial bailout of General Motors. Obama merely doubled down on the policies Bush put in place.

We see the same thing now with the secret trade deals Boehner, McConnell and the GOP Congress are excited to approve. Whether you are pro or anti “free” trade, any secret deal cannot be good for the average citizen.

That's not an argument; just a restatement of your obvious position.

Tell me what's wrong with those statements.

Like any liberal, you have to look behind the curtain of words. And Rand has a lot hiding back there. Including his dad.

Some of us haven’t forgotten his two week liberal fit last year that brought out the Wizard. Among other ‘breakthroughs.’

regarding drug sentences, I wouldn’t know if they are harsh or not because I never dealt drugs. When I drove a cab I had plenty of offers. I also had plenty of drug dealers in my car and they were not innocent guys trying to make a buck. they were pretty bad characters.
it’s fascinating how this military machine met the protesters in Missouri and yet nobody died. Meanwhile at least nine guys got shot in Waco.
Pandora day and night to the black vote until the election and they will still vote 19 to 1 for hillary

I kinda sorta like Rand, but he’s way too anxious to please way too many people.

Okay, so that's the conventional wisdom in Washington.

That tells us what's not going on.

Good to know, I guess.

You're assuming that (A) Rand Paul means everything he says and (B) that he didn't plagiarize it.

Rand’s opinion on drug dealers is naive. like I said before I had them in my cab and they werent innocent guys trying to make a buck. they were nasty characters. Even the ones just selling pot.

Rand Paul is no more responsible for his father’s political positions than Svetlana Alliluyeva was for hers.

Now that marijuana is spreading on its own, a lot of his supporters have become non political.

‘You’re assuming that (A) Rand Paul means everything he says...”

You are right to point that out and that applies to ALL the candidates. The only president I recall who stayed loyal to his campaign statements was Reagan. He had been preaching those beliefs for the previous twenty-five to thirty years.
