This has been a week of surprises from Chief Justice John Roberts. Wednesday he joined the Courts more liberal members in a 5-4 decision in a significant First Amendment case. Tuesday at the argument in Obergefell v. Hodges, the marriage equality cases, he suggested that a ban on same-sex marriage might present a straightforward question of sexual discrimination. These superficially surprising moves support Robertss oft-repeated claim that he believes the Justices should decide cases based on the law, not politics.
But as Robertss tenth term as Chief Justice comes to a close, the biggest tests of that claim are still to come in the Courts decisions in Obergefell and in King, the latest challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). While no one can know for sure what Roberts will do in those cases, theres a good chance that hell remain unpredictable into June.
In Wednesdays decision in Williams-Yulee v. Florida Bar, Roberts surprised Court watchers when he joined the Courts more liberal members to hold that the First Amendment permits Florida to ban judicial candidates from personally soliciting campaign funds.
Roberts wrote for the Court that [a] State may assure its people that judges will apply the law without fear or favorand without having personally asked anyone for money. This was a big deal, and a relative bombshell by the Chief Justice. In the first decade of the Roberts Court, almost every term has had a significant decision sharply limiting campaign finance legislation, and Roberts has been in the majority in all of them. Last year, in McCutcheon v. FEC, he wrote the opinion striking down federal limits on aggregate campaign contributions, stating that the $123,000 limit per two-year election cycle seriously restrict[s] participation in the democratic process

Roberts is a big how the courts are viewed guy. This first amendment case is not really a surprise to me when taken in that light.
Drifting, my eye! He jumped ship the day he voted in favor of 0vomitcare. Traitorous, anti-American.
(I had great hopes for him when he was nominated. What a resounding disappointment.)
You just forget, he had a “secret” meeting at SCOTUS on January 14th, 2009 by the Chicago-Godfather-Thugs. The threats are still affecting Roberts decision makings. He remember Bill Gwatney, Breitbart, Hastings, etc.!!!
He was driving down the legal highway at 90, and turned his steering wheel hard left on Obamacare.
I can still hear the screeching...
You half expect to hear someone has a 1990s photo of Robert’s coming out of a bath-house with Barry hand in hand.
[[These superficially surprising moves support Robertss oft-repeated claim that he believes the Justices should decide cases based on the law, not politics.]]
Really? Because his statement about ‘sex discrimination’ is purely politics, and ignores the law that societies have held for millennia
[[Roberts wrote for the Court that [a] State may assure its people that judges will apply the law without fear or favor]]
That’s funny coming from someone who not only voted for something unconstitutional, but who also gave the most asinine explanation for why he did so- it was clearly a pure case of politics- He was bullied into voting to violate our constitutional rights- it’s apparent now that Roberts is a LIAR
Drifting?
We would have IMMEDIATELY closed the borders on 9/11. We would have IMMEDIATELY stopped immigration, and "fundamentally transformed" the Immigration department. We would have IMMEDIATELY addressed the people and told them why this happened, how we plan to fix it, and how the Left is going to react--and not to give in to them. We would have IMMEDIATELY annihilated parts of Afghanistan and started deporting Islamic symps out of this country. We would have IMMEDIATELY purged the FBI, CIA, NSA, Pentagon of all Clintonistas and leftists. And we would have arrested the worst saboteurs
We would have IMMEDIATELY increased our domestic drilling capacity and cut our dependence on foreign oil. We would have IMMEDIATELY addressed the deficit and debt, and made important cuts in the government budget. And we would have IMMEDIATELY started looking for the BEST candidates for the Supreme Court. Antonin Scalia would have been eventual CHIEF Justice, and no one would have ever heard of the closeted perv dickbag John Roberts.
Roberts was solid for awhile. The court kicked butt on Campaign Finance and 2nd amendment. He is somehow compromised now, since Obamacare.
He originally was on the same side as Scalia and the conservatives and authored the original majority decision, which evolved into the dissent. Something changed that May or June that altered him completely as a Justice.
.
There are all sorts of pictures of him where he looks like he is a homosexual when in his 20s and early 30s....his marriage may be a sham and the “adoption” has issues which may be “Bribe” material. His sex life would be “Bribe” material also— and majorly so if he is like Clinton with Epstein (and children (boys are more often raped than the girls).
It reminds me a little of obama’s “marriage”.
He is being bribed-—that is obvious.
He is smart enough to understand the concept of Individual Natural Rights only come from God—not from some irrational base urges that ignore Science and Right Reason.
Any “Just Law” that promotes the vice of sodomy is a joke and irrational and removes the Natural Rights of a baby to have a biological mother and father-—but then, the Supreme Court says Killing Babies is a Natural Right also-—totally unconstitutional “Law”.
The oligarchy is ejecting the US Constitution for Stalin’s-—totally irrational “laws” and evil “laws”.-—both unconstitutional.
Roberts is a PUPPET.
You should explain just what you mean by that...
The seven who voted to legalize killing babies should have been impeached and removed.
The fifty governors should have nullified the abortion decisions.
When those two things did not happen, the people of the United States decided that this society would eventually end in flames and bloodshed.
If you have been around for awhile. I have no need to explain my comment!
I swear I’m the only person who has spent 5 years in Washington DC and actually “drifted” right.
