audi King Salman bin Abdulaziz has sacked his younger half-brother as crown prince and appointed his nephew, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, as the new heir apparent, state television said.

Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall, reporting from Jizan in the country's south, said the reshuffle was announced by royal decree via state television early on Wednesday.

Political earthquake'

Khalil Jahshan, the executive director for the Arab Centre of Washington from Fairfax, Virginia, said that the reshuffle constitutes a "political earthquake of the greatest magnitude".

"The Saudi Arabia we knew a few hours ago is no longer," Jahshan told Al Jazeera, adding: "These are serious changes that will have repercussions not only domestically but also internationally.

"This is a very decisive answer by King Salman to the doubts that many experts have expressed since he came into power with regards to his health, his decisiveness and his control over political matters in the kingdom. And this is his unequivocal answer."

King Salman also appointed his son, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as deputy crown prince, and replaced veteran foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal with the kingdom's Washington ambassador Adel al-Jubeir.

Per Twitter, the shakeup, announced at 4 AM Local Saudi time, goes deep into the government. LOTS of people are losing their jobs, and being replaced.

Could this be related to the huge terror arrests in the kingdom this week?

I suspected that the action in Yemen had divided the family.

This is very big news indeed.

Sounds like a big deal. I was under the impression that the next in line had the gig of Crown Prince, period.

I’d say “I hope the whole family dies” but they would likely be replaced by a jihadist government.

They have given the old departed king his measure of respect and now the changes are started. New sheriff in town.

Never will figure these people out though.

The ME can go off just any time from now.

The royals were paralyzed by the age of the previous king, and the current one is not young either. This move seems to have been made based upon skipping a generation. They figure Saudi Arabia will be busy and this is a critical time, with Iran ready to go to war with them. Not a time to wait around for someone to die in order to make decisions.

Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, as the new heir apparent, state television said.

Prince bin Nayef attended FBI training for three years back in the 1980s. He is credited with many anti-terrorism actions.

There have been four attempts on his life, the most recent of which was in August 2010.

“I like salmon sashimi.”

Salami sashimi isn’t too shabby either. It’s one of those nouvelle fusion tapas dishes, you know ...

The fact that Iran now has a toe hold in Yemen and the Saudis, despite huge expenditures to equip and train an army, have no confidence in their ability to defeat Houthi tribesmen has clearly destabilized the ruling royals.
