Health officials are warning New Jerseyans about a street drug that has sent about 30 people to emergency rooms throughout the state.

Authorities have issued the warning for synthetic marijuana, commonly known as spice or K2, which can cause severe agitation, seizures and renal failure.

No one has died in New Jersey as a result of the drug. But a 22-year-old South Brunswick woman apparently suffered an adverse reaction on Tuesday.

Yo! It's only a little weed. Well, not exactly. Why not just mix a little Drano up and heat it up and snort the fumes.

If it is synthetic, it ain’t weed.

Weed is a plant.

Another creature spawned by the War on Drugs:

'A week ago Dr. Nirav Shah, New York's health commissioner, warned doctors that products containing so-called synthetic cannabinoids (chemicals tweaked to be like THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, but different enough to evade legal action) can have some serious side effects.

'"Calls to New York State Poison Control Centers have increased dramatically in 2012 and severe side effects including death, acute renal failure, as well as other significant negative effects to the cardiovascular and central nervous systems have been linked to use of these products," Shah wrote.

[...] '"Synthetic marijuana is really a misnomer," Lewis Nelson, an ER doctor at NYU Langone Medical Center told the News. "It's really quite different, and the effects are much more unpredictable. It's dangerous, and there is no quality control in what you are getting."

'Quite a few states have taken steps to stem the sale of fake marijuana. And a year ago, Drug Enforcement Administration took emergency action to ban five chemicals used in fake pot.

'But the makers of the stuff have been creative in coming up with different variations of the chemicals used to avoid restrictions.'

Well, it sounds closer to when people dipped marijuana or tobacco in PCP solution to get a stronger high, although such people were about as mentally unstable as nitroglycerin

It wasn’t, people got way more high from mixing PCP with marijuana, but they pretty much lost their reasoning over time with the use. Not just memory impairment and reaction, but we’re talking people going unstable or just mindless.
