Republicans Are Enthusiastic About Scott Walker, Divided On Jeb Bush
Huffington Post ^ | April 17, 2015 | Ariel Edwards-Levy

Republicans are most enthusiastic about the prospects of nominating Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker for president, a new HuffPost/YouGov poll finds, but they're open to rallying around a number of potential candidates--with the possible exception of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Members of the party are generally optimistic that whoever emerges from the crowded field of prospects will succeed. Three-quarters of Republicans predict their party will win back the presidency next year, and most look favorably on several of the politicians fighting for the nomination.

Walker generated the most excitement of the six candidates tested, with 45 percent saying they'd be enthusiastic to rally behind him, and just 8 percent reporting they'd feel negatively if he were nominated.

That puts Walker about on par with Hillary Clinton, whom 44 percent of Democrats said they'd be enthusiastic to back.

Republicans are more likely to be unsure of their opinions about Walker and his rivals than Democrats are about Clinton--and, for the most part, Republicans who aren't positive about one of their candidates are more likely to say they're undecided than to express a negative sentiment. Fewer than 20 percent said they'd be dissatisfied or upset with Rubio, Cruz, Paul, Carson or Walker.

The exception to that trend is Bush. While he's polled at or above Walker's level in many primary matchups, he also garners far more antipathy than his rivals. Just 42 percent of Republicans said they'd be enthusiastic or satisfied if he were nominated, while 44 percent said they'd be dissatisfied or upset.

Both support for Walker and disdain for Bush were accentuated among the GOP's base, including those who described themselves as conservative or as a member of the tea party. Seventy-nine percent of tea party members said they'd be enthusiastic about a Walker candidacy, while just 3 percent said the same of Bush.............

Winthrop Poll: S.C. Tea Party “can be a force” in 2016 "With just two of a dozen or more presidential candidates having declared their intention to run for office, South Carolina’s tea partyers are already lining up behind Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

In the latest Winthrop Poll released Wednesday, Walker and Texas Senator Tex Cruz were in a statistical tie among the 1,000 or so likekly GOP voters polled. But poll director Scott Huffmon says support between mainstream republicans and Tea Party backers may be split — at least for now

“The Tea Party Likes Scott Walker to the tune of people who approve of the Tea Party picked Scott Walker 18.2% and Ted Cruz was #2 among those who support the Tea Party,” Huffmon said. “We’re already seeing that those who support the Tea Party might have different preferences.”

The poll also shows South Carolina’s Tea Party is growing, with 13.9% of the poll’s respondents identifying themselves as part of the anti-Washington political establishment movement.

“People think that’s small but you’re talking about well over 200,000 people in the state,” he said. “They can be a force if the(y) are unified.”

And the decision whether to elect Scott Walker or Ted Cruz may cost the conservatives a presidency if all the Democrats get behind one canfidate. Remember the rules have changed; its not really bipartisanship anymore, its liberals vs conservatives (or the insane vs the sane)

Predicted almost a month ago that Walker would get the nomination in the end. I doubt Cruz would want second place.

Anyways...IMHO, Cruz should be Attorney General. That's his niche.

And exactly how is this going to happen? Are you saying liking Cruz or Walker at this point is unproductive? Does it make you think that not coalescing around just one of the two will enable Jeb Bush or something?

Regardless of what Democrats do and who they come up with for a candidate, how does this play in any way picking a Walker or a Cruz right now?

The only thing I can think of is that this is just some justification to choose, say, Walker over Cruz on something other than their Conservative credentials using some specious reasoning.

Frankly, I'm not buying it.

I also am interested in the answer to Gaffer’s question. How does a contest between Walker and Cruz in the primary help the democrats?

fwiw:

Showdown in the Sunshine State?

"....First, the Republican National Committee has passed stricter proportional representation rules, which means that these early March primaries may end up scattering delegates across lots of candidates, effectively diluting these states' influence, rather than magnifying it. Further, the RNC has shortened the window for proportional contests from one month to two weeks. As such, Florida's primary will be one of the first winner-take-all states on the map, which could transform it into the "make or break" contest (instead of South Carolina) for the nominee...."

I am still not going to accept this as a backhanded way to promote Walker over Cruz ostensibly to keep Bush from winning the nomination. Not even. Not before we are allowed to see Walker/Cruz face off in some debates.

Voters in MY state (Georgia) need a real slate from which to choose - not Iowa and New Hampshire’s pick.

Nothing backhanded at all.

This is just putting the cards on the table.

How they’re played, is the question.

This is just putting the cards on the table.

Cards laid out by a Huffington Post writer with a less than stellar background on conservatism, to say the least.

We cannot allow money and/or gaming to present us with a choice of Hillary Clinton vs Jeb Bush. At that point all that’s left is a second civil war or revolution.

Walker has always, since I been following him in 2011, seemed liked someone who could beat Dems, and he certainly did in WI.

He’s comes off as sane, not someone arrogant or cocky.
No whiny hissy fits over being asked questions by the MSM in interviews.

On Feb. 23, 2015 Rush Limbaugh mentioned this debate [linked below] between WI Gov. Scott Walker and the Mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett [who was challenging Walker in a recall election after he "broke" union hold on the state].

[Just this week Mayor Barrett, rose his ugly presence again and accused Walker of being responsible for gun deaths in Milwaukee.]

It's an hour but by watching it ALL you will have a good idea how Walker is going to campaign and interact with the media and critics.

Walker isn't MEAN (even though this Barrett character is dripping with snottiness and the moderator isn't in Walker's camp).

Walker is armed with the facts and he knows how to use them.

Wisconsin Gubernatorial Final Recall Debate - 5/31/2012

There is no way Hillary can compete against someone with this temperament and control of the facts.
