AKRON, N.Y. (WIVB) – The raging debate over the use of the “Redskins” mascot has taken a dramatic turn Friday. As the Lancaster School District continues heated discussions about whether the Redskin name should be replaced, the Akron Varsity Lacrosse team has cancelled its game with Lancaster, which had been scheduled for March 31st.
The Akron “Tigers” were Section 6, Class C champions last year. A majority of the team’s members are Native American. The Akron Central School District has decided to take a stand against the name “Redskins,” by cancelling its non-league game with Lancaster.
Akron School Superintendent Kevin Shanley said, “It’s an offensive term to the Native American population and, it’s disparaging to that community.”
Shanley said lacrosse players have been supportive of the decision. The Tigers hope to fill that non-league contest with a team from another school.
I’m tempted to change my name to Injun Joe.
Akron should be forced to forfeit....

Wait just a minute. Real tigers are vicious and unfeeling, and have a long history of mauling and even killing people. And the Nazi German Tiger Tank killed more than a few Allied soldiers.
As I see it, the Akron Tigers are the ones who must be shunned. Their team name is repulsive.
My high school was the comets and I’ve spent the last 35 years trying to deal with the shame of destroying the dinosaurs.

If I was running a team in sports that got into trouble because some group did not think that having that mascot was respect full to a particular group. I would ask them if the thought child molesters would be insulted if I changed the mascot to Pedo bear. it is ridicules no team out there wants to be disrespectful of anything that gives them there mascot. the mascot is there totem.
Gee, are we missing a bet here? So much angst over the names of groups (sorry, I don’t compute ball games) but where are white Americans’ reparations for all of our forebears that the Indians murdered and scalped? In fact, they murdered some of my own in the Boston Massacre, (late 1700s I think)I am therefore a “victim”, right? Why aren’t we normal caucasion Americans screaming for reparations from the latter-day-named “native Americans” Do I need a sarc tag? Ok. /s
