Militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) seized a university in the Libyan city of Sirte, a faculty member and residents said, days after a video showed them staging a convoy parade.
Islamist militants have made inroads into parts of the North African oil-producing country, exploiting a power vacuum created by a violent struggle for control between two competing governments.

The incident came after the coalition of Islamist militias in control of the capital Tripoli known as Fajr Libya (Dawn of Libya) said they were sending armed units to restore security in the city.
Social media showed photos of hooded gunmen in pick-up trucks and 4X4 vehicles mounted with anti-aircraft guns, brandishing the black flag of ISIS, which has seized large swathes of Syria and Iraq and is believed to have extended its presence to the North African country.
Witnesses said the gunmen had also taken over the once grandiose Ouagadougou Centre in what is the hometown of the late Muammar Qaddafi, where the then dictator once organized extravagant African and Arab summits.
An AFP photographer who managed to visit the city briefly, said the Fajr Libya and ISIS forces were keeping their distance from each other and that there had been no hostilities between them.

ISIS controls the city of Derna, or at least a large part of it (Al Qaeda affiliate group may control some outlying suburbs)
But ISIS is looking to control Sirte as well. They captured the radio and TV stations last week, and now have seized the university and the Ouagadougu convention center.
By far the most powerful force in Libya, 'Fajr Libya' or Libya Dawn appears to have a non-aggression pact with ISIS and is using them as a cudgel against the moderate government in exile which has some loyalists left. Fajr Libya controls the capital of Tripoli, and is a conglomeration of Islamist militias. They now have air strike capability as well after revamping the leftovers of Qaddafi's air force.
Things are getting worse in Libya, MUCH WORSE. And very quickly. ISIS is growing in strength, and attracting fighters from across North Africa to expand the Caliphate.
Obama isn't doing a damn thing to stop ISIS.
Hillary! Where did that $6,000,000,000 missing from the State Department go?
P
Obama never planned to stop ISIS. It is his weapon of revenge on the West.
Re ISIS taking the university. If you can’t afford to go to school, just seize it and go to any classes you want. With your weapons, you are assured of all “A’s” as Castro did.
A late friend of mine was a professor at the Un. of Villaneuva in Cuba. Said Castro used to attend school with a .45 in his waistband.
Don’t even want to know what Che’ had in his pants when he went to medical school (i.e. the Doctor Mengele School of Medicine, Revolution and Torture).
Libya...another Obama success story.
Guaranteed they aren’t going to use the university to teach like normal people do. Subhuman savage reptile brains can only rape main burn murder.
Khartoum
You said it - completely correct. It beats me why Obama gets no criticism for his unlawful and disastrous intervention in Libya.
The Republicans should be beating him over the head repeatedly with the fact that he acted in Libya without one. Maybe they are embarrassed because they acted like cowards and didn't hold him accountable then.
