Feds: No link between pot and car crashes

Marijuana use has not been found to increase the risk of car crashes, according to a new federal report.

Studying car accidents in Virginia Beach, Va., during a 20-month period ending in 2012, researchers randomly sampled 3,000 accident-involved drivers and found no evidence suggesting those with marijuana in their system were more prone to accidents, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report released Friday.

When researchers controlled for factors such as age and gender, they found no evidence marijuana use increases accident risks. This was despite the fact that, in the study, drivers who tested positive for marijuana use happened to be involved in more accidents.

By comparison, the study found drivers with breath alcohol of .08 to be about four times more likely than sober drivers to be involved in accidents. Those nearly double the legal limit, at .15, were 12 times more likely to crash.

The study is billed as the largest ever conducted to assess the relative crash risk of drivers who consume alcohol compared to pot.

Maybe they should conduct the study in Washington and Colorado.

I once go out of my car and into my truck and promptly backed into my car where I had parked it 60 seconds before.

Pot was definitely the primary reason.

Interesting. A federal study found that alcohol-related violations are down while drug-related ones are up — a lot.

And traffic deaths are at or near record lows. Isn’t that the bottom line?

Yet the prohibitionists still claim Cannabis an horrid abomination, while selling Deathanol everywhere.

Ever see a pot head on the road? 5 miles under, 10 and 2, constantly checking the rear view because every set of lights is a cop? I’d MUCH rather be on the road with a bunch of stoners athan a bunch of drunks. Just sayin’.

I prefer driving at 85 mph with a bunch of tweakers that have been up for 5 days.

Not to change the subject. This is the same federal government that assures us mercury preserved vaccines are perfectly safe. Just because you aren't measuring a risk doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Hey, if we get a choice of distractions how ‘bout a sports car and a brunette that is decidedly “not guilty”.

Would not they have to have a handle on sbit more data?

Not being specific, but from what I read, were it a report to me as an old prof, I’d return it with sn “F”’.

Let’s see if the journo-major low IQ types can figure it out.

Pot was definitely the primary reason.

No link between pot and car crashes, are they kidding? They should have interviewed me. I admit to using pot in my youth. One night I was the "designated driver" because I was less stoned than the others. I remember driving and one of my four friends was bumping my shoulder saying "What's that ahead of us?". Oopsie, I was driving on the center divider island on a boulevard and a light standard pole was fast approaching. Rather, I was approaching it! Cranked the steering wheel and got us back on the road. Me and my friends had other close calls. My girlfriend got me to quit pot before I got into further trouble, and I cleaned up my act in my early twenties. I've caused no accidents since!

May I suggest a theme song for these outings of yours?

Forgetting the clutch as I approached a stop sign was one of my common “That’s why they call it dope” moments.
