Why Even Our Friends in the Middle East Don’t Like Us
WSJ Wasington Wire ^ | January 30, 2015 | Aaaron David Miller

President Barack Obama‘s visit to Saudi Arabia this week with a heavy-duty delegation was a smart move. But nobody should have any illusions that this quick stop will fix what’s troubling U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia or other key allies in the region.

These days, the United States’ two oldest and most important friends in the Middle East–Israel and Saudi Arabia–seem to have more in common with one another than they do with Washington. Throw Egypt into the mix and you have an unusual threesome–a Jewish state, a monarchy, and a military-controlled phony republic–that have, as a practical matter, aligned in opposition to U.S. policies that they neither understand nor approve of.

None of this would matter if U.S. allies in that turbulent region were plentiful and reliable. But they aren’t, and the Middle East is in meltdown. That latter alone is reason to be careful in handling friends.

Nobody likes us because nobody can trust us. The US used to stand by is commitments. Now, Obummer does whatever the hell Valerie Jarrett pleases whenever she suggsts it.

No Arab government can trust the US after Arab Spring, and especially the MB support in Egypt. Israel can’t trust us, period. And, even O’s good buddy, that Islamist wannabe near-caliph Erdogan, doesn’t like him any more.

The whole notion of "friends" among nations is a misapplication of the relationship model. We have nations with which we share common interests, or interests which coincide. Nations don't have friends. That stuff is for the media to purvey. If a government official speaks in such language it should not be understood as plain English. It is to convey a certain meaning, and not necessarily the truth.

What's to like about Barry bozo and his merry band of loons that comprise his administration? They have single handedly managed to p.o. both our allies AND our enemies in the Middle East. It is quite a feat when you consider it. I cannot remember a more idiotic and disastrous series of foreign policy fiascoes in the Republic's history.

From my pals who have served over there, the Saudis were never our friends. They hire foreigners to do their work, cooks and maids from the Philippines, laborers from Pakistan, etc. They regard Americans as hired help, for the oil industry, or to serve as their military defenders. We delude ourselves to think that we are friends.

...aligned in opposition to U.S. policies that they neither understand nor approve of.

That's because The One operates at such a high level of thinking, mere mortals cannot fathom his brilliance.

But they should trust him. HE knows what's best for everybody....

the United States’ two oldest and most important friends in the Middle East–Israel and Saudi Arabia

Anybody who thinks that Saudi Arabia is a friend, much less an important friend, much less a most important friend, should not be allowed out of the house without supervision.

Saudi Arabia was, and is, the enemy Main Body and center of gravity.

the Saudis were never our friends

Exactly! The British are our friends (for now). The Israelis should be our friends, but Obama is doing his best to push them away.

The Saudis are NOT our friends, and they never will be. They have oil, we have aircraft carriers. It's a weird symbiotic relationship, and nothing more than that.

Saudi Arabia is an "old friend". Yet all the 9/11 hijackers had Saudi connections. What an odd coincidence.

I didn't know that they stacked Bravo Sierra as high as Obamination’s highest level of thinking — or, just as likely, Valerie Jarrett's. I seriously doubt Obamination has any original thoughts other than basketball, his golf tee times, jetting about on Air Force 1, or yucking it up at fundraisers. The man is a total empty suit.
