In the wake of the damning American Senate report on the CIAs torture practices French far-right leader Marine Le Pen risked a backlash when in an interview she claimed there are times when torture can "be useful to make someone talk".
The report uncovered the brutal CIA interrogations of al-Qaeda suspects in the years after 9/11 and sent shockwaves around Washington and the rest of the world.
The UN and human rights groups are now even calling for the prosecution of the US officials involved but Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing Front National party, seems to have a more understanding view of torture.
Responding to questions on a damning report released in Washington over brutal techniques used by intelligence agents to extract information, Le Pen told BFM television earlier: "I don't personally disapprove."
"At certain times, for example when a bomb is about to explode and 200 civilians could get hurt, it can be useful to get a person to talk with whatever means you have, she said.
"I personally believe the people who deal with terrorists and also getting information out of them to save civilian lives are responsible people," the leader of the far-right National Front party added.
"So has there been abuse? Maybe, and the US needs to determine this.
"Allow me to say this: There can be cases, for example when a bomb is ticking, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, and will explode in an hour or two and could cause 200 or 300 civilian victims when it is useful to get someone to talk."
Asked whether torture could be used to do so she said: "With the means at your disposal."

So you catch three of the worst guys ever, and you suspect that they have info that could kill thousands of innocent people, and you don’t make every attempt to get the info out of them? What would lefties do? I just don’t get it.
Unfortunately, it appears many of those who were tortured were innocent. It is a bad precedent to set to allow the government to torture people in its custody. You can imagine the benefits some government official could have by increasing a conviction rates through an increase in the willingness of those arrested to ‘confess’ their crimes...
No shockwaves. It’s made up by the media.
Just like the race wars.
They’ll both blow over b/c hardly anyone cares - neither situation is real - and we know.
Better the waterboard than the drone strike.
The Bush administration should have done what Western ranchers do when their livestock are threatened by predators on the endangered species list: shoot, shovel, and shut up.
Le Capitain Obvious nes pas?
There are some things I don’t like about Le Pen, but I must admit she’s better than most politicians these days. I think she could really shake things up if she gets into power.
Well, Common Sense ain’t so common anymore.
Yes, The Comfy Chair or The Soft Pillows would work much better. /s
Even a Frenchie gets the reality that the RATS don’t get.
To be honest, I have not read this report. I was not aware we had more than three high profile, hardcore individuals.
Besides, how true is this report? From what I understand we didn’t talk to any CIA people. Also, if this had worked, would the left ADMIT that? And would it be worth interrogating, in one form or another, if we could save lives? Or would we prefer to remain “honorable” even if innocents had to die? This is not clear cut and dried......
I have an idea. Skip the penny ante stuff and act like America used to. Attack the sponsor country conventionally. And yes, there is always a sponsor country. Typically it’s the Saudis. A Marine division should be rolling in and seizing mecca. Torture is playing their silly game. And for the record I don’t think we did anything I would call torture. We were one step removed from the comfy chair of the pythons.
And the way our government looks at me and my type lately, no, I do not support them having the slightest ability to torture or abuse anyone. Stop and think exactly who’s nuts they really wish they could hook the electrodes to. That’s all I’m saying.
The Germans were very official in the use of tortuous techniques.
One word, "Malmedy."
True enough, and our soldiers fighting the Battle of the Bulge did not wait for the postwar war crimes trials to exact revenge for the massacre.
