The Germans in that era had no qualms about torturing Jews, Slavs, resistance fighters, and Communists. They did observe the Geneva Convention with respect to “Aryan” POWs such as the British and Americans, if only for fear of retaliation against their own captured military. There were some instances of abuse, and some downed Allied pilots were killed on the spot by locals.
