Worldwide.

It’s pretty large.

I do not believe most of these people are “unemployable” except that they’ve become so. Bring back jobs and cut down on freebies and you’d be surprised what people can accomplish.

Actually, I think you have that wrong. If Americans were stupid then at least we'd have an excuse for acting the way we do.

The problem is that Americans are reasonably intelligent, but we are also ignorant, ill-informed and very lazy when it comes to educating ourselves and expanding our knowledge.

Yup.

Our company has been desembling our operations in North America for almost 10 years.

No hiring locally, of any sort (though the company is hiring elsewhere in America, just not locally). We still have a huge operation but it seems to be leaving America.

Then that's really part of the problem, isn't it?

I've posted this on threads about U.S. economic issues before. Companies aren't sending jobs overseas to take advantage of cheap labor anymore (for the most part). They're sending jobs overseas because that's where more and more of their customers are located.

Maybe in a couple of generations, but that’s only if you’re optimistic. For the most part, I just see more and more of this country functioning like Indian reservations over time.

America needs to be, for America.

We as a country have created a gigantic mess. We had the worldwide lead, and we have LOST IT. In just one short generation.

The media is completely out to lunch, propping up Obama and trying to brainwash America, but our side is completely sold out as well.

If a party takes America’s side, they will win large

I am extremely worried that our side, is not making any move for American employment.

I worry that move will be done by Democrats, and at this point I believe the GOP will be finished, at that moment.

GOP get with it.

America now has 93,000,000 out of work. Those people are just milking the system.

We need to return to success. GOP stand up for America.

I live close enough to the city so “east-siders” have easy access to jobs in the area, including convenient bus transportation to those jobs. Workers come into restaurants/retail, construction jobs, working for utilities and contractors etc and most of them evolve quite nicely into terrific workers. Better than what seems like a majority of the local youth.

"If I must pay $9, I'm not taking a chance on a beginner."

I wish John would at least note that employers aren't paying $9, they're paying considerably more.

When you add in all the mandated burdens, it's usually at least 25% more, often much more.

So that's not $9, it's $11.25+.

Unfortunately, few people noticed that during the half-decade before the "War," the rate dropped from 22 percent to 17 percent.

The same is true of a great many government programs.

A "problem" is "solved" by passing a law, and activists point to the reduction in the problem after the law is passed as proof the law worked as planned.

But if you look at a longer time span, almost invariably the problem was already gong down, and you can hardly tell from the graph when the law was passed.

This is certainly true of two laws I'm aware of.

The OSHA law which takes credit for a decline in accidents and fatalities.

The double nickel speed law of the 70s took credit for an already declining traffic fatality rate, which continued after the law was repealed.

I.T. is destined to move offshore, or wherever it can be done cheapest. Digital bytes of info know no borders.

The biggest problem with it is there are no shipping costs or time delays.

It stopped because government is not good at making a distinction between needy and lazy. It taught moms not to marry the father of their kids because that would reduce their welfare benefits. Welfare invited people to be dependent.

I retired from the military in 2011 and really don't need to work. I got a part time job several months ago. It was supposed to be minimum wage, but after I talked to the manager he started me out much higher.

He has two more openings now, and has a hard time getting applications. Some people are just too lazy to work. I've asked several other retired people if they want a part time job. Not much luck, even though that is what he wants.

Some people started to say, "Entry-level jobs are for suckers." Many could live almost as well without the hassle of work

I had my first, first hand experience with this in the early 70s. My wife's friend had two children, no father present, my wife agreed to keep her kids (No charge) while she went to work at Hardees, just until she "got back on her feet".

Within a month she quit the job, telling my wife that she could make more by not working. I didn't get it at first but then she explained all the "benefits" she lost by working and I got it. She was better off not working, even if she didn't have to pay a baby sitter out of her wages.

That was 40 plus years ago, it has only gotten worse since.

I like stossel but he and other conservatives miss the point.

There is a world without a minimum wage. It’s called internships. Liberal indoctrination centers called universities run these illegal economic operations for the privilege of indoctrination. It is an important part of crony capitalism.

The reason a minimum wage is necessary is that supply and demand of labor has been skewed. Invaders (legal and illegal) depress wages at all income levels.

I recognize the problem, but don't agree with your solution. An important reason invaders can work for below minimum wage is that they receive other benefits from the government. In other words, hiring an illegal who works under the table for sub-minimum wages is cost shifts costs from the employer to the taxpayer.

I don't see how a minimum wage helps that, because the illegal still gets more total benefit than the non-illegal who is just getting straight wages.

Can you explain what these burdens are?

I have an Indian friend (dot, not feather) who owns a service station/convenience store. He offered me a job, full or part time, my choice, I hadn't asked or even hinted that I was looking for a job. I very politely thanked him but turned him down.

I'm 69, retired for 15 years and definitely not looking for a job.

When my children were small I didn’t work, because I figured out having to pay someone to watch them; at that time there was no such thing as childcare, plus the cost of transportation going back and forth to work for the little money they offered wasn’t worth it. Another thing is the marriage penalty when both couples work
