Globe in Hong Kong: Protest of Politeness dares Beijing to respond

“Hong Kong has picked up the baton and is leading the pro-democracy movement of China now,” said Rose Tang, who was among the student leaders in 1989. “Hong Kong is becoming the catalyst to kick-start the end of an era – the Chinese communist’s one-party dictatorship.”

[....]

What has been called the Umbrella Revolution could as well be dubbed the Protest of Politeness, amid a burgeoning of ideological optimism in a city normally defined by its conservative dedication to the making of fortunes.

Today is the commie equivalent of 4th of July, October 1.

Very interesting.

Hong Kong should never have been allowed under PRC control.

The people in Hong Kong had nothing to do with China and their communist takeover. To the extent they did, they were loyal to the Republic founded by Sun Yat-sen.

It ain’t right what happened to the Hong Kongers who were free and modern, for the most part.

There is a large Christian presence in the leaders of the demonstrations.

The UK literally handed HK to China without giving the people of HK much say in the matter.

They should’ve protested back then, but didn’t. And it wasn’t simply a matter of sheep to the slaughter. There was a lot of ethnic pride involved and a sense that they were glad to be rid of the British.

The people in Hong Kong had nothing to do with China

Unfortunately, Great Britain found it necessary to honor the lease and its term for expiration. It may be argued that the termination of the lease could have reverted control back to the Chinese government in Taiwan, but the various legal impediments to doing so are also reinforced with the practical problem in which Hong Kong was militarily indefensible against an invasion by the Peoples Republic of China (PRC).

Of course they protested and more. They’ve been consistent since day one.

Why do you say things you know nothing about.

Hong Kong was ceded in perpetuity. It was the 99 year lease on the New Territories that ran out.

The British felt they couldn’t maintain Hong Kong without the water and resources from the leased territory.

It’s quite a raw deal for people from Hong Kong.

It’s great after 17 years they are still standing up for themselves.

Apparently I know more about it than.you. I followed events in Hong Kong closely at the time. The so-called protests of which you speak were a joke, drawing only a handful of protestors at a time. Most residents were positively joyous at the prospect of reuniting with the mainland, and equally joyous to be rid of the Brits. Screw ‘em. Let them live under communism if they prefer it. I hope they get a good taste of it.

“Hong Kong was ceded in perpetuity. It was the 99 year lease on the New Territories that ran out.”

Yes, but the boundary ran through the center of Hong Kong and the water had to come from the PRC. It was simply not feasible to return the New Territories without the rest of Hong Kong as well.

“The British felt they couldn’t maintain Hong Kong without the water and resources from the leased territory.”

Exactly right.

“It’s quite a raw deal for people from Hong Kong.”

Yes, but there were 99 years to prepare for the potential exit of the British.

“It’s great after 17 years they are still standing up for themselves.”

Yes, but it is likely that China must give up Chinese Communism before Chinese Communism will be willing to give up possession or control of Hong Kong.

Well you claimed that they had nothing to do with China. Except of course being Chinese, speaking Cantonese, carrying Chinese passports, etc...

You think like the Chinese commies.

I'm quite sure I don't.

Name one big rowdy protest in the early years after Britain handed HK over. Just one. I’m waiting... (But I won’t hold my breath because you can’t).

Therefore, you are wrong. Brainwashed, I think, actually. Are you Chinese?

Thank you, so much! I knew I was right, but was wondering whether or not I’d be able come up with proof. Ninety percent, wow. Can you imagine Americans marching quietly into that goodnight? There’d be blood in the street.
