Juncker rejects UK push for independent scrutiny of EU laws

The new European Commission has rejected the UK Government’s call to set up an independent body to scrutinize EU regulation and impact assessments before and after legislative proposals are adopted by the executive.

Jean-Claude Juncker’s spokeswoman, Natasha Bertaud, told EurActiv that impact assessments would remain an internal matter before proposals were adopted. Frans Timmermans, Juncker’s choice for the new post of vice president in charge of better regulation, would ensure their quality, she said, after pointing to EU treaties governing Commission procedures.

We Americans have a short view of history, and are so stuck in the long-settled Cold War that we don’t recognize that the real next threat to peace is from the West. The instigator is no longer found in Moscow, but the rising bureaucratic dictatorship that is consolidating its power in Brussels. The once-sovereign nations of Europe have jumped into quicksand and are now being swallowed up. Some Europeans (most notably UKIP) see the danger, but it is almost too late for them to get out.
