A sleeping giant: ISIS beheadings made America want revenge

An abundance of polls over the last week taking the temperature of the American public on the threat posed by the Islamic State have begun to paint a clear picture of how the United States was reshaped by a summer dominated by tales of ISIS’s horrors. Americans, it turns out, were profoundly affected by events overseas, disquieted by the apparent new threat to national security posed by this uniquely terrorizing force, and appalled at the slaughter of American hostages.

Two polls released this week showed that nine out of every 10 Americans believe ISIS represents a threat to national security. For independently minded Americans, that’s a strikingly uniform level of agreement on this issue. Now we know why: The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found that the beheadings of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff were the most penetrating news events of the Obama presidency.

“While those surveyed weren’t asked directly about that event, the poll found that 94% had heard news of the two murders, a higher level of public attention than given to any of 22 news events the Journal/NBC News survey has tested since 2009,” a Wall Street Journal write up of the poll read.

Not even the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound drew as much interest or elicited the same level of emotion as had the Islamic State’s barbarism. Bad news travels faster.

New York Times columnist David Brooks has a good take on why the actions of ISIS, like the actions of all fanatical movements with which America has gone to war in the past, inspire such a visceral reaction.

“Our revulsion makes us different from the religious zealots who are prone to commit or celebrate acts like beheadings,” Brooks wrote.

VIDEO: STUDENTS UNAWARE OF BEHEADED JOURNALISTS, ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 ATTACKS

The results are stunning:

-6 out of 30 students recognized this week is the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

-4 out of 30 students were able to name one of the American journalists beheaded at the hands of ISIS.

-29 out of 30 students were able to identify one or more celebrities involved in the nude photo hacking scandal.

I was reading an article, I think it was a quote from a cleric that beheadings were meant to scare people. We’ve been through this already when the Iraqi war started about 10 years ago. They tried a few but then the sensational aspect of it died down. It’s hideous and obviously we need to get at this scum.

I disagree...the “outrage” you are seeing is liberal fear. They don’t have to be “made” to relinquish liberties...they do not know what “liberties” are in the political sense. In their deluded minds they know that the effect of their sainted messiah’s presence is suicide bombings in their neighborhoods in the cities. They really believed that 9/11 was done by or because of Bush. ISIS (or whatever) is just the culmination of weakness and meddling from the west which they perpetrated or cheered on. Like some famous person once said...”The Chickuns r comin home to roost”

I’m almost surprised we haven’t seen a beheading yet from the Oval Office.

General Juan George Patton Williams emerged after his fellow journalists were beheaded. For more than a decade prior, he derided any effort to kill jihadis.

As to Fearless Leader, whatever he undertakes will turn into a disaster (above and beyond the expected uncertainties of war), so my choice would be to batten down the hatches, support our allies, and wait ‘til the next pres gets in to make any major policy decision. Hypocratic Oath time for foreign affairs.

(wringing hands) I just don’t understand why we have to resort to “beheading shaming”. These people have a hard enough time keeping their knives sharp, practicing their public diatribes, and wearing those uncomfortable masks. Must we make it more difficult by shaming them?

America doesn’t want Revenge—it Needs Revenge and Justice—Not for the man with the Knife but the leader who ordered such a thing—watch as more Americans and Brits go under the knife after 9-11. The threat must be OBLITERATED! Send in the B-52s! Burn out this cancer with nuclear fire!
