All too often these days, I find myself fidgeting by the doorway to my exam room, trying to conclude an office visit with one of my patients. When I look at my career at midlife, I realize that in many ways I have become the kind of doctor I never thought I'd be: impatient, occasionally indifferent, at times dismissive or paternalistic. Many of my colleagues are similarly struggling with the loss of their professional ideals.
It could be just a midlife crisis, but it occurs to me that my profession is in a sort of midlife crisis of its own. In the past four decades, American doctors have lost the status they used to enjoy. In the mid-20th century, physicians were the pillars of any community. If you were smart and sincere and ambitious, at the top of your class, there was nothing nobler or more rewarding that you could aspire to become.
Today medicine is just another profession, and doctors have become like everybody else: insecure, discontented and anxious about the future. In surveys, a majority of doctors express diminished enthusiasm for medicine and say they would discourage a friend or family member from entering the profession. In a 2008 survey of 12,000 physicians, only 6% described their morale as positive. Eighty-four percent said that their incomes were constant or decreasing. Most said they didn't have enough time to spend with patients because of paperwork, and nearly half said they planned to reduce the number of patients they would see in the next three years or stop practicing altogether.
American doctors are suffering from a collective malaise. We strove, made sacrificesand for what? For many of us, the job has become only thata job.
That attitude isn't just a problem for doctors. It hurts patients too.

The amount of regulations they have to follow is staggering.
You know things are bad when Dr. Bombay wants to quit. Calling Dr. Bombay!!!
Well duh.. it is a job.. a givernment employee.. like teaching..
I wonder why?
I’ve noticed the growing incompetence. Idiots almost killed a family member 3 different times due to lazy, stupid mistakes. Instead of winning do your damn jobs.
YMMV. Give them serious consideration.
It's not the medical field alone but a large segment of all American walks.
We never questioned ourselves before the 60's ... never.
We WERE the big dog ... and bad, too !
Now ... after 50 plus years of down trodding, brow beating, second guessing and just plain battle fatigue ... we wonder who we are anymore.
It ain't just you, Doc.
Let’s see, a decade of schooling, extremely large student loans, and yet the system is trying to only let them get paid what a well paid computer programmer makes.
Any questions?
Well, doc, welcome to the unhappy with your job club. Boo hoo.

Welcome to 2014 and beyond, Friend! If we work in the Private Sector, we’re ALL screwed, no matter WHAT our profession!
All by design, Comrade. All. By. Design.
I’ve been working since 2008 with both hands tied behind my back and one eye blinded due to 0bamacare. I’m pretty sure that Doctors are not the ONLY ones suffering under this 0bamanation!
EVERY job is important; from the guy that does your dry cleaning, to the guy that runs your local grocery store to the gal that figures out your taxes.
Yes, 0bamacare hurts doctors, but it f*cks with us ALL, so who wins here? The biggest whiner? I think not.
Secondly, if you haven’t seen this coming, YOU are in charge of your HEALTH, your MONEY, your LIFE. Get your crazy-@ss some bankable SKILLS and you’ll be fine. Cut out the fat, the booze, the pills and the cigarettes. Take a WALK every day while you still can and NOT have to take your ‘papers’ with you!
Of course, I’m preachin’ to the Choir here, but still...
Ask Jimmah and Rooozlyn KAHTAH. Things are much better in Cuba- nobody gets sick— officially. And Michael Moore verified all this on film, no less!! LOL!.
The old Doctors...That's as far as i had to read....But i finished and came to the same conclusion...
Google “Katie Tyra.” The doctor should still be in prison, but he is still practicing medicine.
Big Pharma and Big Insurance helped obamaumao do this. Cause they think they’re going to get 1) exclusive formulary vendor of choice for medicine, paid by the gubmint— that is their actual business plan. And 2.) big insurance thinks everyone will HAVE to pay a premium to them for coverage... when in fact the premiums will be un payable, even as they get subsidies paid for by YOU and ME the taxpayers. In the long run-— they will be put out of business. Single payer is the goal, and that payor is DA Gubmnint! Stupid lazy crony capitalist RINO/DINOs all at the trough. Actual brilliant internists need. not. apply. We all better learn self-surgery and healing ourselves by reading and supplying from veterinary suppliers. Deo Vindice.
The writing was on the wall after the close call with Hillary-care. It was only a matter of time before the stars lined up again, and they did for Obamacare.
I saw it back then, and made DAMN SURE that my kids did not get anywhere near that profession, and now they’re making more money, with less hassle, than doctors are making - not to mention virtually no debt.
Totally bummer that we had to toss away such a good system, but it was something that we had virtually no control over.
If they’d known what was coming they might have become vets. At least DVM’s retain autonomy over patient care.
