The images of police in riot gear armed with heavy weaponry and tanks has at times become the alarming backdrop for the Ferguson story, with pictures that television can’t resist.

“The images of police in riot gear armed with heavy weaponry and tanks has at times become the alarming backdrop for the Ferguson story, with pictures that television can’t resist.”

I haven’t seen any tanks in Ferguson, has anyone?

Armored personnel carriers are a reasonable way for cops to protect themselves when dealing with rioters throwing bricks, bottles, molotov cocktails, and shooting at them.

Without adequate protection the cops would be forced to start shooting the rioters to protect themselves. Is that what the liberals want?

This argument that the rioters are out-gunned by the police is the same BS liberal bedwetters spew about the terrorists
in Gaza.

My reply is...Good, I’m glad they outmatched!

Had they done due diligence, they would have known they couldn’t afford the maintenance, but that is never a consideration when things are done on the taxpayer’s dime.

I am not speaking about SWAT teams, but police officers on patrol that I know, and know of, have a pistol on their hip and a shotgun in the trunk. There is nothing about them that one would call militarized. In fact when facing gangs they are seriously outgunned.

To be clear I have no problem using these devices once a riot is taking place. What I don't care for is the rest of the year. I live near a town of less than 1000 people yet the police drive around in SUV type vehicles and are in black utility type uniforms. WHY!!! Police on regular patrol should look like the police...not some tactical squad!!!

Rand Paul, the potential presidential candidate with a strong libertarian streak, registered his objections in a Time piece:

“Big government has been at the heart of the problem,” the Kentucky senator says. “Washington has incentivized the militarization of local police precincts by using federal dollars to help municipal governments build what are essentially small armies—where police departments compete to acquire military gear that goes far beyond what most of Americans think of as law enforcement…

And this is what it all boils down to.

Libertarianisn.

The odd thing is, Jim Rob has already condemned Rand Paul for his liberaltarian thoughts here. Yet the anger and hatred against cops continues to drive this place.

No insult. Observation.

You spread lies.

Why?

Ignorance or agenda on your part?

I don’t think you’re seeing anger and hatred towards police.

You are seeing concern and outright fear about police that have become paramilitarized. Especially police that have become paramilitarized for, seemingly, no good reason.

Thats a huge difference. There are little towns up in New England that are developing SWAT capabilities. Because the moneys there, they can and dammit the town next door has SWAT too and we look like peons for not having it ourselves.

Thats before adding the notion that once a capability is developed, there’s going to be incentive to justify the costs of developing it by using it.

The Library if Congress and the Dept of Education also have their own SWAT teams.

Maybe that's the reason for the war against traditional law enforcement... Obama feels that between 'Homeland Paranoia', the FBI (soon to be renamed 'the Chicago Enforcers', and various Federal Agencies he's got his 'army'...

What good are all of those military weapons and accoutrements when Gov. Jay Nixon and Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson have the police force just standing there watching the criminals looting the local stores?

but many cities do need it as we see in Ferguson where people are actively shooting at police.

No they don't. That is the job of the National Guard, not peace officers.

The police should ensure the peaceful daily routine of people's lives. If an invasion occurs, as is the case in Ferguson, the governor should call in the state military force to deal with a paramilitary force. Then the police can come back in with clean hands to help rebuild.

Are you a copsucker?

I ask, because that’s the usual charge routinely leveled at one around here who dares to defend the JBT’s, the thugs with badges, the donut munching dog shooters, etc. etc.

So you can't actually cite anything I said?

No surprising since nothing I said is really debatable. The police do indeed engage in civil asset forfeiture and when they do they get to keep the money. It's a widespread and well documented practice. The fedgov does indeed have a program to supply military gear to local law enforcement. It's part of the federal budget and no secret. So what are you going to say isn't true?

There was nothing military at all about the Brown incident.

I know. What does that have to do with the excessive militarization of our police forces in general.

Local government hire police. They can fire police.

You are lying to spread your paranoid propaganda and hatred.

Like all propagandists you use facts and half truths in distorted manner to lie and present a false impression.
