One House Republican decided his colleagues needed a little inspiration, so he sent every one of them a new Bible.

Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) sent a letter as well, telling each of his House and Senate colleagues that the “best advice comes through meditating on God’s Word” and that the Holy Bible could “help guide you in your decision-making.” …

Religius values are important for the man, and for men. If you start having religion run the government we are in trouble.

Yes, I am sure he passed it along for the literature value. He would have been better off sending along the Federalist Papers.

Aside from the fact that this is not a suggestion of establishment of a federal religion whatsoever, remind us what the state church of the USSR was . . . ? and of the People’s Republic of China?

Much of the Constitution is based on the Ten Commandments. Should we reject it on that basis?

I can pretty much agree with your assertions of having religious values for the basis for law, but not using the law to enforce religious values.

You should explore the founding of our nation. You will quickly learn that Christianity was an integral part in the founding of our nation. And how you would have a problem with someone giving leaders Bibles is beyond me. Whether they accept them or not is entirely up to them. I hope they will accept them, read them, and learn of the only hope for our nation, Who is Christ Jesus. The One Who will guide them as they make difficult decisions.

Y’all should do some research on the Founding Fathers. Most notably Washington, Madison, Jefferson, and Paine.

None of them were Christians.

In fact, if they met you at a social event and you discussed religion you might think of them as a little weird.

But go ahead and think of the founding fathers as Christian men if it makes you feel better.

Sending one to Shelia Jackson Lee is a complete waste of time. She needs a primary reader to work on for a while..... OR she needs an audio version of the bible....

Really? Washington and Jefferson were not Christian.

Do you really think the image of one Congressman thrusting his religious views on anyone else is going to make one single iota of difference on their belief systems? Really?

All it is going to do is make the rest of the country think all Republicans are bible thumpers. That is NOT the image you want going into the elections.

This Congressman strikes me as being as much of an idiot as Pelosi and Reed.

Do you not want the Congress to have wisdom? Surely you see what happens when foolishness prevails instead - you get what we have now.

Proverbs 9:10 says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and the knowledge of the holy is understanding”.

See Vermont Lt? You learned something already and you didn’t even get your Bible yet! I suggest the King James Version...

Washington and Jefferson were both Christian. Only liberal revisionist propaganda dictates otherwise. Especially with Washington, you would never have had him say things such as this if he were not Christian:
Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and Citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity…And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. …

— Farewell address
Do you think Washington was talking about Islam?

The American Communist Litigation Union has been working to twist the US Constitution into the USSR Constitution ever since Roger Nash Baldwin founded it.

I own several copies of the bible and I read it regularly. Thank you for thinking of my education, though.

OK, here is my issue. I am concerned that “religious” right is so concerned about doing things biblicaly, that they cannot fathom someone following another path.

My views on God and the world to come are probably very different than yours. But I would bet from a secular standpoint we agree on 99% how the country should be run. You do not need to quote the bible to me to get us to agree. However, when someone does (and I often have FRiends saying they will pray for my soul! ha ha) it puts me off.

Right and wrong are pretty clear if you have even the most basic of a “philosophy” education.

In a secular government the time to debate the moral and ethical worthiness of a candidate for Congress is every two years. I am sure the “litmus” test in Mississippi, for example, is far different than it is in MA.

Once someone has been elected, it is time to find ways to achieve common ground and that means compromise. We are lacking leaders who have the stomach to work to come to a solution. Instead, we have a Congressman taking it upon himself to educate his peers with the “proper way.”

I would guess that there are a bunch of Catholics who are going to be wondering why the King James Version is different from their’s. Is that offensive to them? Will that change their mind. Do you think they will convert? How about the Jews in Congress? Do you think they haven’t read the Torah? Or the New Testament.

I know colleges have changed, but even my kids had to take a semester with the New Testament as Literature to graduate. I loved it when I took it. The history of the bible is wonderful.

But, I don’t need a high ranking member of the Government telling me that I need inspiration from his religion of choice. He insults my intelligence.

Washington was a Deist. He believed that God set the world in motion and then stood back.

Jefferson was an amalgam of many different religions.

Do I see Jesus or Christ in that paragraph?

You see, different religions can share similar beliefs. Do I think a religious instruction is important in life? Absolutely. Do I think YOUR instruction is correct? I have no idea—I have neither shared my beliefs, nor have you yours.

I do know that I do not want a Congressman suggesting to anyone what is the “right” path.

I share his God. I agree with the premise he puts forward. As a member of Congress, he should know better than to propose HIS was as the RIGHT way in such a manner.

It is insulting to the Founding Father’s tolerance.

Washington was no so-called “Deist”. The man was Episcopalian his whole life.

Aside from the rest of your liberal propaganda, what use is it to you to read the Bible?

As for Congressmen “suggesting what is the ‘right’ path” in a religious sense, that is their right under the Free Exercise clause of the First Amendment, without trying to introduce legislation to create a national church in violation of the Establishment Clause of the same amendment, and here you are suggesting to abrogate their rights in that respect. I wonder why you hate that right so much.

No, or something.

It’s perfectly legal under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment.
