The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee says a proposal to allow illegal aliens to receive permanent legal residency by enlisting in the military won't be in the underlying text of a must-pass defense bill, dealing a serious blow to a push to enact the immigration measure.
I do not intend to include the ENLIST Act in the proposed National Defense Authorization Act that I will submit to the Armed Services Committee next month. I have reached this conclusion without regard to my views on the underlying policy, but because I do not believe that the Chairmans mark should be the original venue for this debate, Rep. Buck McKeon, the chairman of HASC, said in a statement.
Over the past several days I have heard from Members on and off the committee on both sides of this issue. They have made sound arguments and raised valid concerns, and my colleagues and friends Congressmen Denham and Coffman deserve a great deal of credit for responsibly raising the matter. This is an important issue that I know will continue to be debated going forward, he added.
While closing a significant door for sophomore Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), the bill's author who is heading the push, the proposal is far from dead.
For instance, Denham said Friday Majority Leader Eric Cantor is very supportive of his efforts.
Yes. Very, Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA) told Breitbart News when asked if Cantor was supporting his push. He has told me to work through the process. I'm actively getting as many co-authors as I can. I'd still like to bring my bill as a stand-alone bill to the floor, he added...

The “ENLIST” Act. ROTFL! Freakin’ liberals. Homosexuals and people who unable to understand one another. Should provide us with a fabulous military.
Shamnesty ... just say NO.
Immigration is not effected one bit by not allowing illegal aliens to enlist in the US military...
Illegal aliens have nothing to do with immigration..
they are not immigrants...
Well, it’s good to know that homosexuals and illegal aliens are willing to fight and die if need be, defending God, family, country, constitution and the rule of law. Patriots all.
Oh, wait. Under Obama, the military no longer recognizes God. Or family. Or Constitution. Or the rule of law. What country?
Die? No one said anything about dying. That's for bitter clinging chumps. /s
Back in the 70s I believe it was possible for a non-citizen (NOT an illegal alien) to earn citizenship through military service. I served with a guy from the Phillipines who was in that program.
That seemed a good idea to me.
ILLEGALS ? Hell, no.
Yes, we had some aboard the ships I served on in the late 60’s. They were used mostly as servants for the officers. I thought it was pretty strange at the time.
Hmmm... no, they wouldn’t do that with the homosexuals. Would they?

They were called Stewards Mates at the time (SD).
Blacks had originally had the ‘job’ but when integration was finalized in the Navy the Filipinos were ‘recruited’ to supplement the Blacks. In my time (50/60’s) the SD were mostly Filipino with Blacks.
Believe they were ‘disbanded’ when CS (Commissary Men) cooks became known as Mess Specialists and they sort of blended SD and CS.
Believe the Filipinos were granted citizenship after 4 or 5 years but figure when they retired and went back to PI with their retirement pay they were well off financially.
If it’s such a great idea, why do they want to blackmail people into voting for it by stuffing it into the defense authorization bill?
Because anyone who votes against it can be accused at election time of voting against everything good in the bill.
This looks like Denham trying to save his own skin by appearing to support amnesty.
Sounds like a way to put a lot of enemy moles into our Armed Forces.
Thanks JimRob.
I’m kinda wondering how an illegal alien could pass a security clearance check?
I have never liked the idea of recruiting criminals who are not even Americans to serve in our military.
He can’t. But that won’t stop them from strapping a 45 on his hip and allowing him to stand security watches.
