Democrats Plan Ads in Challenge to Koch Brothers
The New York Times ^ | MARCH 21, 2014 | ASHLEY PARKER

Posted on 03/23/2014 6:56:30 AM PDT by Kenny

WASHINGTON — Senate Majority PAC, a group that supports Democratic Senate candidates, is preparing a $3 million advertising campaign against Charles G. Koch and David H. Koch, the libertarian-minded billionaire brothers who support conservative causes and have already poured millions of dollars into the 2014 midterm elections.

The group’s effort will last for roughly two weeks and span five states — Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan and North Carolina. In an attempt to combat the Koch brothers’ influence, the $3 million buy will nearly match what Senate Majority PAC has spent on all of its other television ads so far this cycle, around $3.6 million.

The group is spending about $500,000 in each of the five states except North Carolina, where it is spending $1 million to help Senator Kay Hagan, who is considered one of the most vulnerable Democrats up for re-election this year.

<snip>

Democrats have recently begun attacking the Koch brothers directly, aggressively focusing attention on the publicity-shy siblings and portraying them as rich villains who are trying to destroy progressive politics. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, has repeatedly attacked the Kochs on the Senate floor, calling them “un-American,” and this month the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee began a digital campaign called “The G.O.P. is addicted to Koch” (pronounced Coke).

Senate Majority PAC has featured the Kochs in several ads already, including one in Louisiana designed to help Senator Mary L. Landrieu, a Democrat running for re-election this year against Representative Bill Cassidy, a Republican. The spot opens with a picture of the Koch brothers as a narrator says: “Out-of-state billionaires are spending millions to rig the system and elect Bill Cassidy. Their goal? Another politician bought and paid for.”

When will GOP wake up? Dems do focus groups etc. to find a winning formula, some person or group they can successfully demonize, then they follow that strategy and neutralize the enemy.

GOP sits around with their heads up their a#$%! and think they're going to sweep mid-terms while ignoring Dems attack strategy but they will once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Soooooo frustrating!

Democrats really dig public attacks on private citizens. I think that’s how they get their jollies.

Marxists always attack who they think are a threat to Marxism. Stalin used executions and the gulags and Hitler used the gas chambers. American Marxists use TV and the media.

Pray America wakes up

While Dingy Harry may have immunity when he impugns the integrity of these people on the senate floor, how does that immunity extend to dem pack groups? When does it reach a level sufficient for a libel charge??

As was explained to me on another thread yesterday, the Kochs, whether they like it or not, might be considered public figures under libel law and thus have a higher burden of proof if they sue. And, of course, it would depend on what the ads actually say.

Point being, going after private citizens in political advertising is a hit out of bounds, not that Democrats care.

“Democrats really dig public attacks on private citizens”

I agree. Yours would be an example of a wedge issue the GOP could use against the Dems.

Good job!

I had to unfriend a person in real life when he started spouting company-line as regards the Koch brothers.

The GOP should have the list of Leftist donors handy to launch their own ads. The billionaire, Steyer, who is giving $100,000,000 to the Democrats to further his climate change religion is an obvious target.

The two Koch brothers have given about $5,000,000 each to the GOP, and they have contributed to the Democrats, as well. These facts refute the “Kochs are devils” mantra of the Leftists who are running scared as they see the Senate slipping from their control.

ALINSKY RULE 3: “Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.” Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)

They are really having to fire up their base this time. Nobody cares who the Koch brothers are, apart from the true nut jobs. Let the Democrats run against the Kochs. The Republicans should focus on hanging Obamacare around every Dem neck.

Two can play at that sort of game. They attack the Koch brothers, so we should draw attention to their money bags such as George Soros.

All the Sound and Fury of Democrats screaming about the Koch's in the latest special election in Pinellas County funny the Koch's spent not a dime in that Race.

Washington Post print a untrue story on the Koch's interest in Shale gas in Canada with no worry about what they print.

At least they do something. The Republicans don’t do anything. The only reason we are going to win in November is because the liberals are pissed about Obama for not being liberal enough if you can believe it. Republicans are not going to win due to our ideas and principles that is for sure.

Why don’t the Republican PACS do ads on Soros and all the other crooked dems. There is so much for the Repubulicans to cash in on. They should be able to destroy the dems. Why are they so stupid?

When your argument falls flat demonize someone on the other side. It’s a tried and true tactic by the Left.

In 2000 when I was working on the first marriage initiative in California the media was desperate to make it about the sponsor, Air Force hero and State Senator Pete Knight. We refused to play along. He just smiled and politely declined interviews referring the media back to the campaign. All of our press avails and media appearances were with assorted celebrity supporters and spokespeople. We kept change the “face” of our campaign so that all that was left was our message - and we won big.
