I think we have lost Scotland. I felt it the other day, a disturbing sensation like that moment when the tow-rope parts, the strain too great for its rotten, decayed fibres to bear.
The sulky, puzzled feebleness of the London politicians arguments sounds desperate and defeated. Alex Salmond has already won the September referendum.
[....]
But this does not stop me seeing what has happened. And I am amazed that so few have noticed the real problem. The leaders of the United Kingdom cannot argue for Scotland to stay in a country they themselves are working so hard to abolish.
Mr Camerons allegiance to the European Union (which is total and unshakeable) automatically makes him the enemy of the Union of England and Scotland.

FREEDOM!!! is just another word for nothing left to lose...
From his grave, mr. Wallace smiles.
Not the type of “freedom” that Mr. Wallace would endorse, I'm afraid.
Peter Hitchens always has very thoughtful insight. How he and his brother came from the same household is a mystery to me.
Correct me if I am wrong, but with Scotland gone, won’t it cause Labour to lose man MPS in Parliament?
That would be a good thing since the rest of the UK is more “conservative”?
You’re correct, but I think he’s also saying the Scots see it differently.
In general I think he’s right, but what do the Scots get out of being allied with modern England?
Free immigration of Jamaicans and Pakistanis?
UKIP and the Scottish independence people have more in common then they think.
Sigh. Sickeningly familiar.
never mind Scotland, when is Texas departing?
Scotland will not leave England-—but England will become more Scotish. UKIP will bring about a new Britain—one that will rise from the ashes of the Vichy-Torys and Commie Labour socialist experiments. Then the streets will run red with the blood of Foreign devils, and the nights illuminated by burning mosques. Europe, ran by Germany, will not survive—nationalism will bring an end to the EU Experiment—all such things fail in the end—as it did in the Soviet Union. Out of the coming disruption will come a new and better England.

There are a lot of similarities between the Scottish “question”, and Quebec separatism in Canada.
Quebec separation became more viable with the advent of continental free-trade agreements. While there is no guarantee that an independent Quebec would be allowed into NAFTA; separatists don’t see that as an insurmountable obstacle.
Quebec “nationalists” have a very different view of “nation”, from the multi-culturalists that have taken over Canada’s federal government. Most Québécois value their own language and culture, more than fuzzy notions of “multi-culturalism”. As much as I have opposed separatism for decades; I have to admit that I have growing sympathies for some of the underlying causes of that movement.
A separate Quebec would be a lot like Mexico, but without the Mexican national motto: “Mañana.”
They could use “Manger de la merde anglais”.
As a huge Nigel Farage fan, I do hope you're right.
I expect both countries will remain allies of ours. (Which means Obama will be out to destroy them.)

I’m afraid Scottish politics is the worst of Britain, magnified and concentrated. The SNP is hardcore leftist, pro-EU and pro-immigration, to the extent that there has been talk of introducing border control in the event of independence in order to stop immigrants using Scotland as a back door to enter rUK under Salmond’s half-baked plans.
For the record, Ireland coordinates its immigration policy with Britain, without which the Common Travel Area that exists within the British Isles would not be possible, and the Irish have had to accept this.
Good article, doesn’t go far enough. it’ll be generations before this cr*p is straightened out, if it ever is.
