Health organizations and U.S. nutrition experts say they are calling on fast-food restaurant chains to take sugary drinks off their children's menus.
Margo G. Wootan, nutrition policy director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said McDonald's agreed to drop soda and sugary drinks from Happy Meal menus last year, and 100 U.S. and local health organizations along with nutritional experts said in a letter to Wendy's, Burger King and 21 other restaurant chains that they too should remove the items from their children's menus.
Subway, Chipotle, Arby's and Panera already exclude sugary drinks from kids' meals.
"With 1-in-3 children overweight or obese in the United States, it no longer makes sense to include sugary beverages in restaurant meals for young children," the letter said.
The groups quoted research published in The Lancet that found drinking just one additional sugary drink every day increases a child's chances of becoming obese by 60 percent, Wootan said.

Nanny State PING!
All businesses should be run in politically correct ways, in accordance with ideological purity. For the children.
My kids are in their late 40’s. They still order water when we do lunch......leftover from “the poor years”.
my grandkids dentist told my son his kids shouldnt drink 100% fruit juice it was pure sugar
I always just told my kids, “No.” No need to change the menu.
Do you think they should also be required to post the rationale for the removal? “Parents are considered too stupid to select proper meals for their children so a coalition of busybodies and government has decided it for you. If you have any b!tches, please address them to Moo at the White House.”
I hear that.
“I always just told my kids, No. No need to change the menu.”

Bingo...It should be up to the parents to monitor their preteen kids.
When I was a kid, about the only time we were allowed to have pop was when we ate out. That was not all that often. But a parent can say NO and have them drink something else. I hate nanny state crap.
Well then they should require a BMI on each child before ordering. It makes no sense that my grandchildren can't have a sprite with their meal because some other kids somewhere are overweight.
The new kids’ menu will consist of the McBroccoli
WELLLL...If I were a parent with a young child, and the restaurant didn’t include sodas with their kid’s meals, I would just buy an “adult” drink, and give it to the kid.
LOL your idea cracks me up. I can imagine an electronic scale and laser height gauge at each order point.
If you fail the BMI test, all the “bad” stuff on the electronic order board immediately goes dark.
The drive-thru will take a bit more technology.
When sodas are outlawed, only outlaws will have sodas.
People who don’t own businesses should be the ones who get to run them, because they aren’t blinded by the profit motive. </sarcasm>
Huh??
"No longer makes sense ..."?????
It was always stupid and lazy, sorry. You don't need a college degree to figure out that making your main hydration source carbonated and sugared, would be a pretty dumb thing to do. Water, coffee, milk. Good for go no matter what.
I like to have a soda now and then. I like ice cream floats. I like Strawberry soda. They're treats. That's just me. If people lock their kids into bad habits by feeding them pop or juice or god-knows-what all the time, that's the kids' tough luck and maybe blessing as they figure their way out of it and grow stronger by making smarter choices. It happens a lot.
This is headed toward outlawing soda pop. Or at least making it an expensive luxury.
Taxing tobacco and booze has made a LOT of dough for govt.
I can see where “evil” foods represent an almost irresistable source of more tax income.
I won’t feed this crap to my kids, but feel free to feed it to yours. Really not my business. However, I do think I should be able to put together menus for those to whom my money has been redistributed.
AMEN!!!!
Well said!
If that money was being "redistributed" your way, probably through a good Christian charity, you would have a say. But government has taken over a job that belongs, really, to charitable organizations and churches.
Government is the source of quite a lot of moral strife.
BRILLIANT!!!
