I have seen candidates (I think Jerry Patterson did) give away shotguns before, but I have never seen one give away an "assault rifle." A: Is this legal, and B: are gun control nuts going to go ape**** over this?

I certainly see nothing wrong with it but could we please be about something more than guns?

Nothing wrong with auctioning off a semi-auto rifle and I'm sure the means of transference to the winner will be above board and subject to all applicable laws.

Brilliant!

Legal and Smart

If it’s legal for a candidate to give anything away, then this would have to be legal. The same rules if any that apply to private gun ownership would apply here.

It’s Texas, so the number of people who support gun ownership far outweigh the number of gun control advocates. And if he is not democrat, those gun control nannies probably aren’t in his base anyway.

The state should help finance the purchase of guns for new adults. Not a house, not a car, not an ObamaPhone.

Apparently, his opponent is the same guy who said ping pong is more dangerous than guns.

It’s too trendy for my tastes, and though while it will be a big hit, I think he could do better giving away a bunch of specialty Texas handguns, as much decorative as functional.

Laser engraving is so very good today that they could be impressively “Texas gaudy”, with a big silver star or two on the grip.

Well, this guy clearly knows how to get attention in Texas.

A. Yes, as long as it's handled through an FFL (probably of the winner's choice) and said winner fills out the paperwork, it passes legal muster. They probably have some arrangement where the NICS check will be confirmed as a "pass" before the rifle is shipped.

B. Yes, of course the anti-gun crowd will rant and rave. Which is just what Delasandro wants (getting his ideological opponents to help his campaign - clever!)

An idea with some merit, really. Generally, under the guise of
promoting the “general welfare” we get national government
forced healthcare as a “right” according to liberals. But we
also have the right to own guns. Of the two, gun ownership
is the one expressly mentioned in the Constitution. So since
gun ownership is a right shouldn’t the government provide
guns to the populace? To hell with the politicians. I want my
Uncle Sam to provide my family arsenal!

The General Militia is the whole people is it not? Helping those militia members buy arms, just good financing and not really a handout, seems to make good sense.
