Utah man sentenced for crime committed on LDS mission in Chubbuck

POCATELLO — A Cedar City, Utah, man convicted of felony injury to a child stemming from inappropriate contact with a 16-year-old child in 2012, was placed on probation Monday and sentenced to spend the next 10 days in Bannock County Jail.

Derrick Starley was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chubbuck when the incident occurred. He was originally charged with sexual battery of child 16 or 17 years old...

Starley pleaded guilty to the reduced charge in early November as part of a plea agreement through which prosecutors agreed that they would not oppose probation but also said they would likely ask for local jail time.

JaNiece Prices, assistant chief deputy prosecutor for Bannock County did just that. She said that based on the presentence investigation report and psycho-sexual evaluation, Starley did not appear to be a substantial risk to re-offend, but that he did need treatment for an addiction to pornography.

She asked Sixth District Judge Robert Naftz for local jail time and that the treatment be a part of Starley’s conditions for probation. She also recommended Starley’s probation be a lengthy term to assure he has time for that treatment.

The victim’s father then spoke to the judge, conveying the depth to which the incident has affected the victim and their family. He then said the family has forgiven Starley and only hopes that he gets the treatment he needs.

The judge sentenced Starley to serve 10 days in the Bannock County Jail in addition to the five days he spent in jail when first arrested, meaning he will spend Christmas in jail.

“You affected people by your conduct,” Naftz told Starley. “There has to be some kind of consequence so you understand.”

But you did all this WORK for them for years; can you still get into one of their temples?

First of on the Religious thread it use to be no potty mouth talk

First you need a mormon with a bigger hat size to tell you what "be specific" means.

Cannot think of any reason any more, besides we have our own temple.

Back in 1986 I figured out how to attend my daughters wedding in the Oakland T. (don't ask)

She finally quit the church about ten years ago as have all of my kids.

(don't ask)

Ok; I'll speculate:

You had rubber gloves and a pail and told the doorman you were there to clean the toilets.

We know the truth. And Mormonism is not it. Mormonism is false gospel. Look it up.

Jim, I never claimed that it was. I was simply surprised at the level of vituperation against Mormons and the amount of posting space some were willing to consume with the matter. But that’s just my opinion. I think it would be more productive to channel that anger against our government. Or if you want to go after Mormons, go after that bastard Harry Reid, or Flake, or the Udall’s. They are about destroying our country and that for me is far more important than how or who they worship.
Happy New Year and a wish for FR to have continued success in it’s mission this coming year.

Don’t think anyone holds anything against individual Mormons. Fine people for the most part. But Mormonism itself is a scam.

Reports on mormonism are not attacks on mormonism, they are an invitation to discussion. Unfortunately the FRAM cabal is committed to silencing any exposition of mormonism on FR that might dismay a potential convert. Your argument of the discussions consuming posting space and being an unproductive use of our time is specious and a smokescreen. Where is the self righteous offense on endless arguments over Catholicism, or threads about American Idol and whatever that ridiculous vampire show is called? Hmm?

Mormons are very nice people. Moonies are very nice people. The folks in Guiana with Jim Jones were very nice people. Apparently you have an agenda against very nice people being informed, and more damning, you want to duct tape the mouths of people who do manage to break the bonds of approved Morg® thought/speak and emerge from the Joseph Smith cult as eyewitnesses.

Every day I discover a new ex-mormon or two on this site I never knew, and they are slow to reveal themselves because they know FRAM insures that ex-mormons with a testimony will be attacked, called haters, liars and bigots, or sometimes (ahem) "time wasters", at least when the Boss reminds you of your manners.

There's nothing in the mormon condition that sunlight can't cure. But there are people with a vested interest with keeping others in darkness. You either don't know anything about what the mormon cult does to people, and you're doing this out of ignorance, or else you know everything and you're lying in the service of a dead pedophilic con artist. Anyone who knows even a little bit about mormonism, who cares enough to do the most cursory search, knows the damage this cult does. And ex-mormons such as myself, know intimately.

I completely agree! And I would add that they have a lot of company in the phalanx of “organized religions” who take your money in exchange for subjugating you to their “belief systems.” I don’t need anyone to try and compel my behavior and tell me that “I am not good enough.”

The FRAM clown even identifies FReepers on his webpage...if you’re known to post information that rebuts, refutes or otherwise “disparages” mormonISM, your FReepname will be posted.

The point is this, posting information that sheds light on the doctrine, theology, practices, teachings, history, etc. shouldn’t be viewed as “anti-” anything...that position is an inflammatory, emotionally charged position.

Used to generate a vociferous and oft times visceral reaction to the posters, not the information.

Oh, and if you were not aware, it is precisely because of posts like Elsie’s and others that I was forced to challenge my own beliefs as a mormon...I got my knickers in a twist the same way many here still do...folks may not like the presentation method or the presenter, but the information is there.

And because of a change in my attitude towards the method and presenter, I’m now an ex-mormon.
