Fearful moment of truth for Ukrainians and Putin: Soviet-style tyranny or freedom?

Who lost Ukraine? ....President Viktor Yanukovych, is on the verge of permanently consigning Ukraine to Russia’s sphere of influence. ....He wants Ukraine to become a vassal of Russia — as it was for centuries under Czarist rule. ....

The Russian dictator is a murderous former KGB thug, who openly longs for the return of the Soviet Union. He believes the U.S.S.R’s disintegration was one of the greatest “tragedies” of the 20th century. Think about that: He is nostalgic for a monstrous totalitarian regime responsible for the deaths of over 40 million — including the genocidal terror famine, “the Harvest of Sorrow,” that claimed 7-10 million Ukrainian lives. Ukraine was the cradle of anti-communist resistance within the former Soviet Union.

This is why Soviet leaders, such as Joseph Stalin, sought to smash any semblance of Ukrainian nationhood. Stalin waged a war against the Ukrainian peasantry in the hopes of breaking Ukraine’s backbone. He failed. But this explains Mr. Putin’s obsession with subjugating Kiev. He has never forgiven Ukraine for its fierce opposition to Soviet domination.

Putin despises Ukrainian nationalism. At a 2008 NATO meeting, the Russian strongman told then-President George W. Bush, “Ukraine is not a real country.” Rather, Putin said, it was a “gift” from Moscow. He publicly refers to Ukraine as “Little Russia.”

Yet, his bellicose revanchism masks a deep fear. If Ukraine were to escape Moscow’s grip and become part of the European main, it would pose a mortal threat to Putin’s rule. Ukraine is a large, Orthodox, Slavic country that neighbors Russia. A democratic and prosperous Ukraine — anchored in Western institutions and based on the rule of law — would reveal to the Russian people that a viable alternative to a mafia state exists. Ukraine’s example would spill over, forcing Russians to confront Putin’s authoritarian kleptocracy.

Sad that they have to choose between the Eurasian Union and the European Union, both authoritarian empires. Actual independence was never an option, i.e. when the USA turned on its left heel.

I think the Ukraine should give up part of it’s territory to putin...

Specifically the land with a 10km radius around Chernobyl nuclear plant...

Putin could build his house there....

The EU would benefit from adding millions and millions of Ukrainian Christians to their population. The whole world would be better off with a more Christian EU. Ukraine could even tip the balance of power to pro-American pro-freedom Eastern Europe. Ukraine could be the salvation of Europe and Russia as well.

Anything that benefits the EU is bad for freedom. Even a large influx of Christians won’t change its nature; it has to be changed fundamentally from what it is.

Putin will get his way..

Much of the former Soviet Union encompasses fly over land that no one frankly has any interest in..

except for those hardy peasant souls that live off of brush-eating goats in the flyover areas, they might take exception to the assertion that nobody cares. they care.

Option 3 is of course, don’t join either. What’s wrong with being independent?

Only the power of Christ can defeat the evil of mohammedanism and reverse its infestation of Europe.

That was how the Orange Revolution was sold to the public via the media.

Ukraine hasn’t even been invited to join the EU. They would benefit from a trade agreement with the EU while remaining independent. Rejecting the agreement to try to appease the mass-murderer KGB Putin would be a capitulation to the Kremlin’s Neo-Soviet bully thug intimidation and blackmail tactics and the end of Ukraine’s independence and freedom.

No free trade agreements with the EU have the connotation of independence, sadly. The European Economic Area forces its members to abide by EU laws.

That makes sense to us; I have to wonder, however, how many Europeans are capable of the independence of thought it would take not to side with this larger force, that, or another.

By the way, everybody, Sunday is Double Double Dessert Dessert Day. Don't let America down!

“Ukraine hasn’t even been invited to join the EU. They would benefit from a trade agreement with the EU while remaining independent.”

Read, “of course the EU has no intent to allow Ukranians to cross EU borders freely and work where they choose,,,,, But the EU 4th Reich will happily agree to control the gas delivery infrastructure in Ukraine.”

The EU trade agreement would be a bilateral treaty and the EU would have no power to force Ukraine to do anything they didn’t want to do.

You’re projecting. It’s your Neo-Soviet hero Putin who wants to control Ukraine’s pipelines with his state-run corporation Gazprom.

The EU would never agree to any such trade agreement, even to get under Putin’s skin. It’s either their way or the highway.

Its all but certain the Russian-speaking Crimea would reject EU laws and any attempt by Kiev impose them there would bring about intervention from Moscow. And the Black Sea Fleet would be a powerful deterrent to Ukraine curbing Crimean autonomy.
