YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) A commuter train that derailed over the weekend, killing four passengers, was hurtling at 82 mph as it entered a 30 mph curve, a federal investigator said Monday. But whether the wreck was the result of human error or brake trouble was still unclear, he said.
Asked why the train was going so fast, National Transportation Safety Board member Earl Weener said: "That's the question we need to answer."
Weener said the information on the locomotive's speed was preliminary and extracted from the Metro-North train's two data recorders, taken from the wreckage after the Sunday morning accident in the Bronx.

“Hey Johnny, look at this neat trick...”
and why was he wearing a fireman's hat?
Too funny! Didn’t hear much about that tragedy, also haven’t heard from Willie Green in quite a while, maybe he’s too busy laying down rail for the high speed train in CA.
Don’t bother Googling my fictional accounts and Willie just wants to ride the rails and grease the skids.
This train crashed after the load it was carrying shifted. It was carrying two carloads of bitcoins...
I'll bet the Engineer is an Affirmative Action Hire.
That something went wrong long ago, probably even before the train was built.
The place where the cars rolled onto was right at the corner where two rivers meet. It was a miracle none of them went into either one.
I didn’t think a sharp curve was left to the engineer to navigate. Are there not automatic brakes and a navigation system programmed into train routes these days (like auto pilots) so these things cannot happen? Should be.
Maybe he was trying to drift the train into the station?
Kinda like trike drifting!

Early Sunday morning.
My guess is he nodded off and woke up too late to slow the train before it went off the rails.
Ridin’ the train...
high on cocaine...
....Casey Jones you’d better, watch your speed....
"The engineer, William Rockefeller, 45, told officials he applied the brakes, but they didnt respond, a source told the Daily News. Rockefeller was being treated for undisclosed injuries."
Pic of engineer in the following article...
Exactly and what a coincidence the same exact thing happened in July in Spain!
If the crash is the engineer’s fault, he should be charged with manslaughter. If the train was functioning properly, there is no legitimate reason for the train going 82 MPH.
ATC is supposedly incorporated into Metro North equipment...
From here:
Signaling and Safety Appliances The Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines and the New Canaan branch are equipped for cab signaling, and all passenger rolling stock is equipped to receive the cab signal. Cab signaling displays the appropriate block signal in the engineers cab. All rolling stock is equipped with Automatic Train Control (ATC). ATC enforces the speed dictated by the cab signal by means of a penalty brake application should the engineer fail to obey it. There are no intermediate wayside signals between interlockings: operation is solely by cab signal. Wayside signals remain at interlockings. These are a special type of signal, a go or a stop signal. They do not convey information about traffic in the blocks ahead - the cab signal conveys block information.
In my view you’re right, there’s a lot lives at stake. I know little about trains, planes or ships but ships and planes have crews and I believe safeguards built in that those crews use.
Im surprised there are not automatic warning alarms on trains when they exceed speeds or are not slowing down appropriately. Hell, my $200 portable garmin navi knows the speed limits on every road I travel and my speed (on the navi) turns red when I exceed the posted limit. How this isnt incorporated into these trains makes no sense.
Think about it ... do you really need a crew of 4 union members at all ... Ricky the robot could do it all, hence the fatal flaw in you reasoning.
Thanks, looks like I was wrong on that Affirmative Action claim.
