The latest update of Stimsons policy mood series suggests that the American public in 2012 was more conservative than at any point since 1952. (Actually, since mood in each year is estimated with some error, it seems safer to say that the current level of conservatism roughly equals the previous highs recorded in 1980 and 1952.) While the slight increase in conservatism from 2011 to 2012 is too small to be significant, it continues a marked trend that began as soon as Barack Obama moved into the White House.

I think Mike Lee is a great spokesman for our values and his ideas can attract the mushy middle, which we need to win at the national level and in many Senate races as well.
Higher is more conservative.
This is difficult to believe, looking at the recent election results.
what’s the angle of the comPost? This must be the mandatory once in a year “appeal to conservatives who think we’re a bunch of obama ass kisser which we really are” article.
At the state level, Republicans are doing very well. If it weren’t for the elitist boobs ruling the GOP at the federal level, the country would be in a lot better shape.
Here’s a link to a podcast on the stability of the American electorate over time:

We need to share conservative values in a way that attracts independents and the mushy middle.
They do not define ‘conservative” the same way we do.
Agreed. We win on the ground, but lose it to the GOPe. Some of that blame, though, goes to “TEA Party” candidates who just aren’t ready for prime time. We lost a couple of Senate seats that should have been easy pick ups.
You mean the one Romney lost? The one where 4 million white voters stayed home?
Read the article. It’s the Monkey Cage, so WAPO has a looser leash there.
This is pure self-delusional drivel. When conservatives start winning when it counts, come back with the headline.
The more liberalism ruins people the more of Rush's low information voters (aka idiots) come out of the woodwork with the rest of the cock roaches.
Those who want to complete the destruction of this country want to sign up 20 million new low information voters (aka idiots).
Actually not. When you get 90% of the urban vote it overwhelms a lot of conservative votes in other areas of the state. Of course some urban precincts provide 110% of the vote which makes it even more difficult.
And more ignored by government employees while they strive to steal elections, shred the Constitution prostitute the law.
I mean McAuliffe and the new mayor of New York, just off the top of my head.
RE: Americans are more conservative than they have been in decades
If this were true, how come Obama is president?
Where are these “conservatives” when you need them to stop a communist from leading our government?
2014 will tell us soon enough whether this article is true or not.
That explains it.
Ugh! It’s not the WaPo, but the Monkey Cage and James Stimson is a researcher. Please read the article, pre-opinions are especially subject to high volatility and low-reason.
They’re more conservative with their own money... other people’s money - not so much
I tend to agree with your view.
Every year 2.5m (mostly white, majority R voting) people die and are replaced by 2.53m (mostly minority, heavily D voting) people.
The trend is not our friend.
That's aka Useful Idiots, to you Steve.
