White Hipsters in Austin: What Black Mob Violence?

The white hipsters of Austin want us to know that race had nothing to do with the 200 black people who fought, destroyed property and threw rocks at police a few days before Halloween.

White people do it all the time, said Katie Friel, who writes for Culture Map in Austin. But the only time anyone calls it a riot is if it involves a large number of black people, she says. She pointed to a 2011 punk rock concert where mostly white fans tried to tear down the chain link fence. Police sprayed pepper gas. No one said that was a riot, she said.

“If Austin wants to grow into the creative, supportive, progressive community we claim to want to be, we need to stop thinking, seeing and reporting in black and white,” she said.

IIRC, it WASN'T a riot. It was during the annual SXSW music fest. A venue hosting a popular music act was sold out. A chain-link fence had been erected behind the club, in the alley, as many of the neighboring clubs had done to prevent freeloaders from crashing the gigs. A bunch of freeloaders were in the act of climbing/pulling down the fence when the cops showed up. There were some arrests, pepper sprays, etc...

This was nowhere near the scale and damage that occurred outside of Highland Mall caused by a large number of feral black amish youths a couple days before Halloween. That "mall" is, for all intents and purposes, closed. A community college is re-developing that property for its administrative offices and a campus. The last few years the mall was open (after the annual Texas Relays - a track meet hosted by UT), the parking lot would become filled with a scene of feral amish gangbangers and their hoopties that became so intimidating, the mall would close early as white shoppers were keeping away for obvious reasons. Of course, this enraged the local press and race-baiters to no end.

I imagine Katie Friel is 19 or 20 years old and has no knowledge of much except how to sing kumbayah in several languages.

Hiding the demography isn’t the problem. It’s people like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson who have no problem painting everything as a racial issue as long as it support their cause. Katie Friel fits right in there.

Tearing down a fence is not attacking, beating, robbing and killing innocent people who happen to be walking by while White.

Lafayette, Louisiana, where I previously lived for many t of years, was the host of an annual national black fraternity “convention.” Nearly everyone in the city abhorred the event: The attendees were rude, destructive, disruptive of business and normalcy. Thousands would descend on the city, many of them not even member of any fraternal organization...they were just along for the party or to be of service: selling drugs to the party-goers. They would all get in their cars and drive en masse down major thoroughfares at rush hour, periodically stopping, getting out of their cars, dancing and drinking alcohol in plain view...tying up traffic and defiantly chiding the motorists who were complaining. They would pull into business parking lots, filling the parking places and blocking the lanes completely, keeping anyone from entering or leaving the business...drinking, throwing trash and insulting the patrons. Business owners and motorists would call and complain...but the police were told to stand down because one of the city councilmen was a member of the organization. The hotels hated to rented them rooms because they knew there would be hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and that they risked charges of racism if they refused...so they rented anyway. Everywhere these attendees went they left piles of litter, trashing the city parks, disrupting business...it was horrible and it was accepted...and these “fraternity brothers” are supposed to be the crème of the crop of college students...this is who we are now seeing in leadership positions in the black community...they believe they are untouchable.
