Hallmark, the Kansas City greeting card company, edited the lyrics of "Deck the Halls" on one of its 2013 ornaments to omit the word 'gay' and has received criticism on its Facebook page that puts the company in an unfamiliar position of defending a product.
The original carol verse goes: "Don we now our gay apparel." But Hallmark's version, which appears on a Christmas ornament designed as an ugly Christmas sweater goes: "Don we now our FUN apparel."

And what, exactly, would be homosexual apparel?

I guess they’ll have to revise those lyrics from that Civil War song, too:
“We’ll all be . . . festive . . . when Johnny comes marching home.”
I would have gone with day apparel (As in Christmas DAY).
Guess I don’t buy Hallmarks crap any more.
There is nothing Gay about being a homosexual or Lesbian.
They seem to be a miserable bunch.
There is tradition in Gay Apparel Christmas verses.
We should not have let them have that word.
Hallmark is another company worth boycotting.

Gay was so co-opted so that I sure don’t want to say it. Admit it...it comes to mind whenever you hear it....
Besides, watching Geo. C. Scott’s version of a Christmas Carol and seeing his nephew Fred mince in and out of scenes, made me wonder if the “gay apparel” didn’t mean then what we all think it means now....

Personally, in terms of altering public perception, I think choosing the term “Gay” when referencing HOMOSEXUALS was the most brilliant and successful marketing campaign ever devised........
