On the one hand, it’s a good idea to be respectful of religious holidays. However, in a nation like America that has people from every faith on earth, if all of us took a holiday every time some religion had a holy day, we’d never get anything done. The Council on American–Islamic Relations would apparently be just fine with that.
Standing in front of the Montgomery County Council Office Building in Rockville, Northwest High School senior Anhar Karim said he is one of many students in the county who have faced a hard decision related to two Muslim holidays. Karim said that when a holiday conflicts with school, he can either celebrate and miss class or go to school and miss the celebration. “We are forcing our students into an unreasonable decision,” said Karim, who is president of the Montgomery County Muslim Student Association. Karim and other speakers urged Montgomery County Public Schools to close when classes fall on Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr during a Monday press conference held by the Maryland chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations and the Equality for Eid Coalition. Eid al-Adha celebrates sacrifice to God and falls on Oct. 15 this year. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan and was Aug. 8. The dates of the holidays change because of the Islam lunar calendar. The coalition, which is sponsored by the council, formed about a year ago to pursue a long-standing goal for the school closures. Percentage wise, there really aren’t very many Muslims in the United States and once you get outside of say, Michigan, you could probably make just as good a case that Hindus, Scientologists, and Voodoo practitioners deserve holidays off as Muslims. That’s not a slap at Muslims; it’s just the demographic reality of the country. So, no, schools shouldn’t be taking Islamic holidays off.
CAIR is a terrorist front group. We don’t need to listen to their ‘demands’.
My religion (which I just invented) demands that I be awarded an A for any course I take.
If I threaten to behead (excuse me, warn of possible consequences to) school officials, will I get my way on this, just like the Muslims?
And I demand they leave the US.

Communities that have a lot of people of a religio-ethnic background that celebrates certain non-Christian holidays often WILL remember those holidays with days off their schools. It’s seen a lot in Jewish neighborhoods, and God bless them.
However when they don’t, generally the minority peoples thus affected don’t complain — they count what they believe God wants as more important and act that way — and the schools understand and there is no fuss.
Maryland and the other blue states will fold.

These demands are only the beginning. Wait until all school girls are wearing burkha’s and they all bow down and pray to Allah a few times during the school day.
Do what the Feds do. Declare your religion/holidays and get to take the day off. Let the rest of us work.
Jeeez, it’s not that Muslims are a significant element (other than black muslimes). Although with current immigration enforcement, it’s hard to tell.

well, if you have to miss school for a day, what’s the big deal???
Back in my day, there were quite a few Jewish students in my school. On Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashana(sp?), they were absent. Nobody made demands that the school close to accomodate their religion. Why do we need to bend over backwards to appease Islam in this manner? To prove how liberal we are?
take the day off if you need to. Sheesh. Why do we need to change every aspect of society so that some minority is not offended????

I agree, but the Jewish holidays are not a great example in this case - Montgomery County schools are closed for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (which fell on a Saturday this year).

I don’t think NJ will; we have too many imports from around the world (they’d have to do the same for Hindus, Buddhists, Rastafarians, etc.).
When do muslims observe “Execute a rape victim for fornication day”? How about “Saw off a kuffir’s head day”?

I demand all Maryland schools teach Christian values, about our savior Jesus, and how to discern good from evil. Evil such as a blood thirsty cult willing to perform sadistic acts of terror around the world on a daily basis.
