Steyn: Party Politics
Steyn Online ^ | 9/17/2013 | Mark Steyn

Prowling my hotel room the other night, I discovered a copy of the latest Vogue, kindly provided by the management. So, after bringing myself up to speed on Jennifer Lawrence — a "girl on fire," apparently — I turned to a profile of Susan Rice. She was the girl sent to put out the fire, dispatched by the Obama administration to slog through all the Sunday talk shows the weekend after Benghazi and blame it on some video. In Sir Henry Wotton's famous formulation, an ambassador is a man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country. In the case of Susan Rice, a U.N. ambassador is a broad sent to lie to her country for the good of her man — viz., Barack Obama. Happily, it worked. A year on, the director of the video is still in custody, and Miss Rice is now national-security adviser. So she and Vogue were in party mood....

...Out there, in a ramshackle outpost somewhere on the fringes of the map, brave Americans abandoned by their government are dying on a rooftop. But here in the metropolis the dazzling klieg-light luster of Mia Farrow and Jill Abramson plunges all else into shadow.

If you're not looking at the world through Mia Farrow's blue-tinted glasses, if you're in Beijing or Moscow, Ankara or Canberra, it's the shadow that everyone sees, very clearly — the sepulchral Habsburgian twilight of a dimming power enjoying its last waltz.

There’s no shortage of material when reflecting upon the decline of America.

Necessarily depressing. Mark Steyn is a prophet, of sorts and this piece is brilliantly written. America spirals into second-class status and history will debate whether Obama planned it this way or simply blundered us into irrelevancy. FReepers know very well that it was the former but many will assign our demise to simple ineptness on Obama’s part and - this part will be factual - apathy on the part of a large portion of American citizens too easily distracted by ‘celebrity’ rubbish, professional sports and other entertainments offered up - and greatfully received - by the (willfully) ‘low information’ masses.

Steyn’s insight, [re: how the Bengahzi attack was responded to in Washington by our leaders.} Shamefully watched without lifting a finger to aid or assist them. Ignoring the lives that were lost, and not allowing the survivors to talk to the press, and the American people wanting answers. LIES! LIES!! is what we have been given. Mark Steyn has clear vision of the circumstances.

Hillary showed us her true feelings regarding the events.
She told us “what difference does it make now”.

If it was my son, or friend, etc., it would and does matter and IS very important.

SHAMEFULL BEHAVIOR BY THE POWERS OF THE PRESIDENT'S MEN/ WOMEN, WATCHING AND DOING NOTHING.

THANK YOU, MARK STEYN for your article.

From Afghanistan to Egypt, a debt-ridden America bankrolls its own eclipse, betraying friends, promoting enemies, despised by both.

And oblivious to the inevitable outcome. They were still dancing in the Vienna salons in August 1914. Everyone who mattered was there - who cared about the rumbling outside?

A clown mocks George Bush senior: crickets.

A clown orders the military to stand down while our ambassador and servicemen are killed by vicious thugs: crickets.

A clown mocks Obama: outrage.

I support the clown. The one with the mask.

The reference to the Habsburg Empire is striking.

It is sadly appropriate.

Hapsburg officials and bureaucrats - much less Franz Joesph himself - were far more intelligent and competent than the crass, glib entourage of self-cherishing and self-absorbed courtiers and sycophants surrounding the clueless 0bamugabe.

Franz Joseph was highly diligent and dutiful. An admirable man in many ways.

But nobody ever considered him particularly intelligent or competent.

Whatever its limits, Franz Joseph’s intellect and competence towers over that of the current occupant of the WH.
