Pope breaks with protocol by bowing to Queen Rania of Jordan
The Telegraph ^ | 8-31-2013 | Tom Kington

As head of state at the Vatican, not to mention the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, protocol requires visitors to bow to him when they meet him at the Holy See.

But Francis, who has made the forgetting of formalities a trademark of his papacy, bowed when he met a smiling Rania as she visited the Vatican with her husband King Abdullah II on Thursday.

"Up until the 19th century visitors would kiss the pope's shoes, and the tradition is still that all visitors, women included, bow to him, but Francis behaves as he did before he became pope and is not interested in protocol," a senior Vatican official told The Daily Telegraph.

It is not the first time the Pope has eschewed formality when receiving visitors.

When Cristina Kirchner, Argentina's president, met him in March, a day before his formal inauguration, he gave her a kiss after she presented him with a gourd for mate, the traditional Argentine tea.

"Never in my life has a Pope kissed me!", Mrs Kirchner said afterwards.

When she met the pope in July, Brazilian's first female president, Dilma Rousseff took the initiative, kissing Francis on both cheeks.

Francis' bow was just the latest in a series of signs the pope has no time for ceremony.

On Wednesday he showed up in central Rome for a religious ceremony in an unmarked Ford, without the papal flag or number plate, driven by a Vatican gendarme.

He then entered the church carrying his folded mitre tucked under one arm. The incident recalled his carrying a personal briefcase up the steps to the plane on which he flew to Brazil in July.

This “I am humble” kick seems to be turning into “showing off.” It becomes pride. Hey, everyone, look at me! I’m HUMBLE!! I AM more humble than YOU are! Watch the news to see how humble I am going to be tomorrow.”

Just be a regular guy.

So the Popes always bow to Royalty? Did any American president before Obama?

Who cares? What the heck is your problem? It's pretty obvious that this Pope doesn't care about pomp and circumstance -- but then a humble carpenter wasn't all that interested in it either. And as others have pointed out, Francis is hardly the first Pope to make efforts to reach out to Muslims.

If you want another Urban II -- who called for the Crusades -- you probably shouldn't hold your breath. But even then you probably would be whining, because the stated purpose of the Crusades wasn't to exterminate Islam (which you apparently favor), but simply to restore access to Christian holy sites in and around Jerusalem for Christian pilgrims -- a problem that doesn't seem to exist at this point.

Next thing you know he'll be washing and kissing the feet of his followers.

I guess John Paul II was a lousy Pope too! I wonder where he got that from...

"I can see Catholics and Europeans doing that, but do Americans, would Reagan, or Rick Perry, or Billy Graham, or the squirrel hunting guy on the Walking Dead bow, to anyone?

Daryl Dixon bows to no man.

Seriously, remember the angel in Revelation 19, and again in 22. John fell at his feet, and he told John to get up, that he (the angel) was only his brethren and fellow servant.

He’s rock solid in orthodox teaching. He’s just not someone to stick to unnecessary customs. I wish he would stick to many of them, but he’s the office holder and I’m not.

He’s the Pope. If he chooses to keep dialog open and minds from slamming shut to what he has to say by treating folks with what they consider good manners, I’m not going to judge.

hmm, don’t recall Jesus bowing to kings and queens

humility and submission are different - especially to muslims

and I wouldn’t call Queen Rania a “follower” of Christ, would you?

A bow is a recognized show of respect, and only improper when performed by a President of the United States to a foreign head of state. < /sarc >

No, just lepers, the poor and the sick. What's your point?

humility and submission are different - especially to muslims

You really think anybody in the Middle East believes that the Pope is submitting to the Queen of a tiny, impoverished Middle Eastern country wholly dependent on US aid? C'mon.

Also, not that it matters, but the Jordanian royal family is notoriously secular -- they're Muslims the way Joe Biden is a Catholic. They're far more likely to be attacked (literally) by radical elements in Jordan for being secret Catholics than they are to win any praise for getting the Pope to bow to them.

compassion to the sick is not bowing to a king or queen

IMHO the pope pulled an obama by bowing to royalty because they are..... royalty. Showing deference or humility to a muslim is culturally regarded as submitting to the superiority islam

the Jordanian royal family may live abroad like rich socialites but at home they make sure to be very devout keepers of the 3rd holy place al Aqsa in Jerusalem- the Hashemite king of that tiny impoverished kingdom claims descent from family of prophet Muhammed

Another weird post, you ask “who cares?” yet you are on the thread posting away, then you go on attack and start raving about the Crusades and me wanting to exterminate Islam and basically showing a streak of insanity.

You know, this could just be a thread about the Pope breaking tradition and bowing to a Mohammedan Queen, it doesn’t really have to go into the Crusades and extermination.
